18Sound 21NLW5300: 21" neodymium subwoofer with 5.3" voice coil and 98.5 dB

In 18Sound's NLW series, the 21NLW5300 combines a neodymium motor with a 5.3" voice coil (18Sound: 5.35") rated at 1800 W. 98.5 dB sensitivity at 8 Ω (Re 5.2 Ω) and 15.3 mm Xmax mean high output and extension at the same time – at 14 kg, which is light for a 21" driver in this class.

The Thiele-Small parameters: fs 31 Hz, Qts 0.32, Vas 325 l, BL 31 Tm with Mms 0.327 kg. The large voice coil spreads heat over more area than a 4" coil, which reduces power compression in continuous use. The 30 to 500 Hz operating range describes the purpose exactly: subwoofer, nothing else.

Use and enclosure

EBP 91 – both enclosure types are possible, bass reflex is the obvious choice. The guideline: around 185 l tuned to 36 Hz with f3 near 40 Hz. That is compact for a 21" and yields a touring sub with plenty of output in the kick-drum region. Sealed would be around 84 l at fc 68 Hz, sensible only with DSP equalisation. With the enclosure calculator at 42.audio you can check how a lower tuning in a larger volume affects excursion and cut-off.

The crossover sits low; at 8 Ω two drivers can run in parallel at 4 Ω on one amplifier. The 251 mm mounting depth needs to be considered for dual-driver bandpass cabinets.

How does the 21NLW5300 differ from the 21LW2600?

In parameters they are close: Qts 0.32 against 0.33, Vas 325 l against 333 l. The 21NLW5300 offers the larger 5.3" voice coil, neodymium and 98.5 dB, the 21LW2600 uses ferrite. If you want to save weight, go for the NLW5300.

Which cabinet for sound reinforcement?

Bass reflex around 185 l at 36 Hz as a guideline; that gives a transportable sub. For bandpass designs the enclosure calculator at 42.audio provides the simulation.

Which amplifier?
