18Sound 5W430: 5" woofer/midrange with 89 dB and 6 mm Xmax for compact cabinets
A 5" driver with a 1" voice coil and ferrite magnet that 18Sound lists as a woofer/midrange (WM) in its W series: the 5W430 covers 60 to 8000 Hz, which makes it usable both as the bass driver in small satellite boxes and as a midrange in multi-way systems. 80 W AES power handling and 89 dB sensitivity are realistic numbers for 90 cm² of cone area, and the moving mass of 8.2 g stays low.
The Thiele-Small parameters draw a clear picture: Fs 52 Hz, Qts 0.32 and Vas 15 l with a BL of 6.3 Tm. Xmax of 6 mm is respectable for a 5" driver in the pro-audio class and gives the small woofer some headroom when it works down to the tuning frequency in a reflex box. At 1.2 kg and 72 mm mounting depth it fits shallow cabinets, line-array modules or column speakers.
Use and enclosure
An EBP of 144 tells you the 5W430 delivers little low-end in a sealed box (guide value 3.9 l with fc around 115 Hz) and belongs in a bass-reflex cabinet instead: guide value 8.5 l tuned to 61 Hz with an f3 near 67 Hz. That volume fits a compact box or a satellite enclosure; port cross-section and excursion behaviour are best fine-tuned in the enclosure calculator at 42.audio.
Used as a midrange in a 3-way system it should get its own sealed midrange chamber, for which the 3.9 l serves as a starting point. The upper limit of 8000 Hz allows crossovers to a 1" compression driver or a dome tweeter, and Le of 0.49 mH stays unproblematic. For a matching tweeter, 42.audio carries the 1" compression drivers and horns from 18Sound.
What to look out for
- 8 Ω, Re 5.4 Ω: an easy load for any amplifier, 80 W AES per driver is enough amplifier power.
- Mounting depth 72 mm: suitable for shallow cabinets and columns.
- Xmax 6 mm: in a reflex box, protect it below the tuning frequency with a high-pass filter.
- 1" voice coil with ferrite magnet: 1.2 kg, thermally rated for 80 W.
Frequently asked questions
Does the 5W430 work as the bass driver in a small satellite box?
Yes, in a reflex box around 8.5 l tuned to 61 Hz it reaches an f3 near 67 Hz. For real low bass, pair it with a subwoofer and cross over above the tuning frequency.
How does it differ from the Beyma 5P200Fe?
The Beyma 5P200Fe, with Fs 72 Hz and Vas 5.7 l, needs far less volume and has a higher resonance. The 5W430 goes lower with Fs 52 Hz and Vas 15 l but asks for more cabinet.
Can I run several 5W430 in a column?
At 8 Ω, two in parallel give 4 Ω, or series-parallel groups return to 8 Ω. The volume from the guide values applies per driver, so two drivers need twice as much.
