18Sound 6ND410/NM410: 6" neodymium midrange with 102 dB and only 60 mm mounting depth
With 102 dB sensitivity from a 6" cone, the 6ND410/NM410 from the ND series by 18Sound (Eighteen Sound) moves into territory usually reserved for horns. The reason is a moving mass of only 8.2 g on a neodymium motor with BL 11.6 Tm – an extremely light cone that covers 200 Hz to 8,000 Hz and handles 180 W AES on its 1.75" voice coil. The driver weighs 1.25 kg and, at 60 mm mounting depth, is remarkably shallow.
A Qts of 0.24 with Fs 120 Hz and Vas 6.2 l shows a tightly damped motor; Xmax is 2 mm, enough for a pure midrange and a clear statement of the limit. The EBP of 444 is about as high as this category gets and marks the driver unmistakably as a midrange for horn loading or for systems with many drivers working together.
Use and enclosure
The 6ND410/NM410 belongs in a sealed midrange chamber. The guideline gives about 0.8 l with a system resonance of 354 Hz – in practice you choose a larger chamber so the resonance drops and there is distance to the lower crossover point, which should sit well above 200 Hz anyway. A vented chamber (guideline 1.5 l, tuned to 182 Hz, f3 around 230 Hz) brings no benefit with this driver. Where the cone shines is the combination of shallow depth, low mass and high sensitivity: line array elements, midrange horns, compact columns and flat cabinets where several drivers work side by side. The enclosure calculator on 42.audio helps size the chamber.
The upper limit of 8,000 Hz allows a late crossover to the tweeter, but sensibly well below that to keep the beaming of the 6" cone small in the transition region. The driver comes in 8 Ω and 16 Ω – the 16 Ω version is intended for parallel wiring in an array.
What to look out for
- 8 Ω (Re 5.9 Ω) or 16 Ω: choose the impedance according to how many drivers are wired in parallel.
- Mounting depth 60 mm and 1.25 kg – shallow and light enough for arrays and columns.
- Xmax 2 mm: a high-pass well above 200 Hz is mandatory, no lower-mid duty.
- 102 dB sensitivity: the midrange is louder than most woofers, attenuate in the DSP or crossover.
Frequently asked questions
Which designs is the 6ND410/NM410 intended for?
Horn-loaded midrange sections, line array elements and flat columns. 102 dB sensitivity, 8.2 g moving mass and 60 mm mounting depth are the arguments. As a single driver in a small two-way box it would be out of place, because excursion and extension are missing.
What does the 8/16 Ω specification mean?
The driver comes in two impedances. The 8 Ω version with Re 5.9 Ω is the standard choice for single use; the 16 Ω variant suits setups where several drivers run in parallel on one amplifier channel without dropping the impedance too far.
How much amplifier power makes sense?
At 102 dB, a small fraction of what the low-frequency section needs is enough. The 180 W AES are the thermal limit of the 1.75" voice coil; more important than power is a clean high-pass that protects the cone from low-frequency content.
