18Sound 6ND430: 6" neodymium mid-woofer with 5 mm Xmax for compact two-way cabinets

The 6ND430 from the ND series by 18Sound (Eighteen Sound) is the lower-mid specialist among the 6" drivers of this range: a 63 Hz to 5,500 Hz operating range, 5 mm Xmax and a resonance frequency of 64 Hz. This is not a midrange that only reproduces the vocal band, but a driver that can handle everything below the tweeter in a small two-way box. 200 W AES on a 1.75" voice coil and a neodymium motor at 1.25 kg complete the picture.

The version listed here has 4 Ω nominal impedance with Re 2.9 Ω and 92.5 dB sensitivity; the driver also exists in 8 Ω and 16 Ω. The small-signal parameters – Qts 0.24, Vas 12.2 l, BL 7.8 Tm on 13.9 g of moving mass – describe a tightly damped, light cone whose Le of 0.17 mH stays unobtrusive far into the midrange. The mounting depth of 73 mm fits shallow enclosures.

Use and enclosure

As a midrange in a three-way cabinet the 6ND430 runs in a sealed midrange chamber, for which the guideline suggests about 1.6 l with a system resonance of 189 Hz. The more attractive use is the compact two-way box: the bass reflex guideline is 3 l tuned to 97 Hz, with f3 around 123 Hz – that yields small columns, delay lines, nearfield monitors or line array elements with genuine lower-mid content. The EBP of 256 still shows that sealed boxes deliver no extension here; vented or horn loading is the appropriate choice. The enclosure calculator on 42.audio lets you tune lower with larger volumes.

The upper limit of 5,500 Hz allows a relaxed crossover to a dome or a small compression driver, sensibly well below that. With 5 mm Xmax the driver copes with dynamic music, but a high-pass below the tuning frequency remains mandatory.

What to look out for

  • 4 Ω nominal, Re 2.9 Ω: use only on 4 Ω-stable amplifiers, avoid parallel wiring.
  • 92.5 dB at 4 Ω – a different reference than 8 Ω drivers, level-match in the DSP.
  • Xmax 5 mm and Fs 64 Hz: real lower mids in small boxes, set a high-pass below 97 Hz.
  • 1.25 kg and 73 mm mounting depth: shallow and light for columns and arrays.
  • Also available in 8 Ω and 16 Ω – choose impedance by amplifier and number of drivers.

Frequently asked questions

Can I build a small two-way box with bass using the 6ND430?

Yes, that is what it is meant for. The bass reflex guideline of 3 l tuned to 97 Hz with f3 around 123 Hz gives a very compact box; with more volume the tuning can go lower. 5 mm Xmax provides more headroom than the pure midranges in the series.

What does the 4 Ω version mean for the amplifier?

With Re 2.9 Ω the impedance drops below the nominal figure in operation, so the amplifier must drive 4 Ω safely. Two of these drivers in parallel is too low for most power amps; if you combine several drivers, go for the 8 Ω or 16 Ω variant.

How does the 6ND430 differ from the pure 6" midranges in the series?

The pure midranges start their operating range well above the lower mids and have less excursion. The 6ND430 reaches clearly lower with Fs 64 Hz, a 63 Hz lower limit and 5 mm Xmax, which makes it suitable for two-way concepts, while the pure midranges are at home in three-way cabinets.
