18Sound 8NMB750: 8" midrange with lower midrange, 3" voice coil and 6.3 mm Xmax

More coil, more excursion, more reserve: the 8NMB750 is the step-up model in 18Sound's NMB series. The 8" midrange with lower midrange capability carries a 3" voice coil on a neodymium motor with BL 21.5 Tm, handles 350 W AES and manages 6.3 mm Xmax. This version is rated at 16 Ω nominal (Re 10.2 Ω), which makes it a candidate for dual arrangements. Sensitivity 95 dB, working range 56 Hz to 7,000 Hz.

The parameter set is interesting: Fs 91 Hz, Qts 0.37, Vas 7.3 l at 30 g moving mass. The comparatively high total Q and the small equivalent volume mean it stays controlled in very compact boxes, while the 3" coil ensures that power handling is not limited by coil temperature before excursion runs out. Weight 3.5 kg, mounting depth 105 mm.

Use and enclosure

For a vented box the guideline is about 6.3 l, tuned to 94 Hz, with a lower cutoff around 95 Hz. That is a very small volume for an 8" driver and makes the 8NMB750 the driver for slim columns, line-array elements and compact tops. As a pure midrange in a 3-way system, a sealed midrange chamber of about 2.8 l with an in-box resonance around 174 Hz is the option. The EBP of 233 favours the vented alignment when lower midrange is required. Run both through our enclosure calculator.

In vented operation a high-pass below the tuning frequency belongs in front of it; in a midrange chamber, cross with clear margin above the 56 Hz. Going up it carries to 7,000 Hz, so the handover to a 1" compression driver on a horn can sit comfortably high. Matching horns and waveguides from 18Sound are in the manufacturer's category.

What to look out for

  • 16 Ω nominal, Re 10.2 Ω: two in parallel give 8 Ω; a single unit gets less amplifier power.
  • 3" voice coil and 350 W AES: thermal reserve for continuous duty.
  • Xmax 6.3 mm, Vas 7.3 l: lots of excursion in a small box.
  • Le 0.3 mH: low inductance, clean impedance up to the crossover.
  • Mounting depth 105 mm, weight 3.5 kg; datasheet PDF at 42.audio.

Frequently asked questions

Does the 8NMB750 fit in a slim column?

Yes, that is one of its core purposes. Around 6.3 l vented per driver and 105 mm mounting depth fit into a slender cabinet. Several drivers at 16 Ω each can be wired in parallel or in series-parallel groups to reach an amplifier-friendly impedance.

Which amplifier do I need at 16 Ω?

Power handling is 350 W AES. A single driver at 16 Ω receives less power from the amplifier than at 8 Ω, which is compensated with two drivers in parallel. With 95 dB sensitivity the level is high even with moderate power.

Difference to the Beyma 8MI100 or the 8NTLW2500?

The Beyma 8MI100 from our shop sits at Fs 90 Hz, Qts 0.45 and Vas 12 l, so it has a softer suspension and wants more volume. The 8NTLW2500 at Fs 80 Hz, Qts 0.38 and Vas 7.2 l comes very close to the 8NMB750 but relies on the dual-gap motor.
