18Sound 8NTLW2000: 8" midrange with dual-gap neodymium motor, 97.5 dB and Qts 0.21

The 8NTLW2000 belongs to 18Sound's NTLW series, which uses a dual-gap neodymium motor with a 2x2" voice coil: two air gaps, two windings on one former, giving more motor force and better cooling for the same coil diameter. The result reads like this: BL 17.5 Tm, sensitivity 97.5 dB, 350 W AES at 8 Ω, all at 1.5 kg weight.

As a midrange with lower midrange capability it covers 70 Hz to 4,500 Hz. The low Qts of 0.21 at Fs 71 Hz and Vas 13 l is characteristic of a strongly driven cone: high control, little self-resonance, but hardly any low-end extension in a sealed box. Xmax is 4.4 mm, moving mass 28 g, and the mounting depth of 121 mm is on the high side for an 8" driver.

Use and enclosure

Its place is the midrange chamber of a 3-way system or the low-mid section of a top that runs with a subwoofer anyway. The guidelines are compact: sealed about 1.3 l with an in-box resonance around 239 Hz, vented around 2.2 l, tuned to 121 Hz, with a lower cutoff around 164 Hz. The EBP of 338 says clearly that no bass is produced here, but a very controlled midrange with high efficiency. Fine tuning is done in our enclosure calculator.

Place the low crossover with margin above 70 Hz, in a midrange chamber in the region of the in-box resonance; going up, the usable range ends at 4,500 Hz, so the compression driver must not be crossed too high. A 1" or 2" driver from the 18Sound range with a horn from the manufacturer's category takes over there.

  • 8 Ω nominal, Re 5.2 Ω, Le 0.63 mH.
  • Dual-gap motor with 2x2" voice coil: 350 W AES at only 1.5 kg.
  • Qts 0.21: not a driver for large boxes or deep bass.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a midrange need 97.5 dB sensitivity?

Because it sits between a woofer and a compression driver that is often even louder. High midrange efficiency saves amplifier power and attenuation in the crossover. In the 8NTLW2000 it comes from the dual-gap motor with BL 17.5 Tm at 28 g cone mass.

Which amplifier suits the 8NTLW2000?

Power handling is 350 W AES at 8 Ω. A channel in that class with a limiter makes full use of the driver. Because sensitivity is high, smaller amplifiers are no problem either, as long as the low crossover sits high enough.

How does it compare with the B&C 8MDN51 or 8NDL64?

The B&C 8MDN51 at Fs 70 Hz, Qts 0.2 and Vas 16 l is very close to the 8NTLW2000, as is the 8NDL64 at Fs 73 Hz, Qts 0.24 and Vas 11.8 l. All three are drivers for small volumes; the 8NTLW2000 brings 97.5 dB and the dual-gap motor to the table.
