18Sound 8NW650: 8" mid-woofer with neodymium, 2.5" voice coil and 96 dB

18Sound's NW series is designed around drivers that cover lower midrange and mids in one piece, and the 8NW650 is the 8" model in it. A neodymium motor with a 2.5" voice coil delivers BL 15.2 Tm, sensitivity is 96 dB, power handling 300 W AES at 8 Ω. The working range of 55 Hz to 6,300 Hz is wide for a midrange with lower midrange capability.

The parameters tell the same story: Fs 63 Hz, Qts 0.25, Vas 17.8 l, Xmax 5.5 mm and 26 g moving mass. That is a strongly driven cone with enough excursion for the transition to the subwoofer, but light enough for clean upper mids. At 2.4 kg and 111 mm mounting depth it sits in the middle of the 8" class.

Use and enclosure

As a mid-woofer in a 2-way top with compression driver, the guideline is: vented about 5 l, tuned to 92 Hz, lower cutoff around 114 Hz. That makes clear that the subwoofer has to cover the range below, while the top itself can stay very compact. As the midrange in a 3-way design you use a sealed midrange chamber of about 2.5 l with an in-box resonance around 178 Hz. The EBP of 233 assigns it unambiguously to vented or high-pass-filtered use. Cross the low end with clear margin above 55 Hz; in vented operation, protect with a high-pass below the tuning frequency. Going up it carries to 6,300 Hz, and a 1" compression driver on an 18Sound horn from the horns and waveguides category takes over above.

Frequently asked questions

Can I run two 8NW650 in parallel in one top?

With the 8 Ω version you end up at 4 Ω, which many power amplifiers drive without trouble. If you want to stay at 8 Ω, use the 16 Ω version of the model. Each driver then gets its own vented volume of about 5 l.

Which amplifier suits the 8NW650?

Power handling is 300 W AES at 8 Ω. A power amplifier in that class with a limiter is the right size. With 96 dB sensitivity you reach high levels with less power; the high-pass below the tuning frequency matters more.

8NW650 or RCF MB8N251?

The RCF MB8N251 at Fs 68 Hz, Qts 0.25 and Vas 13 l is very close to the 8NW650 but calls for a slightly smaller box. The 8NW650 with Vas 17.8 l and Fs 63 Hz offers a touch more extension with similar control.
