18Sound AMT200P: AMT tweeter with 103.5 dB and 60 W AES for PA and hybrid systems

103.5 dB sensitivity from an air-motion transformer: that is the headline figure of the 18Sound AMT200P. AMTs are usually hi-fi components with efficiency in dome territory. The AMT200P from the Eighteen Sound AMT series is instead built for jobs that normally go to a compression driver on a horn: 60 W AES power handling, 16 Ω impedance, polyester diaphragm, 3.4 kg.

The operating principle is the same as in small AMTs: a pleated foil with printed conductors sits in the magnetic field, the folds close and open with the signal and push air out at a multiple of the foil velocity. With a lower limit of 800 Hz, an upper limit of 18,000 Hz and a manufacturer-recommended crossover of 1.2 kHz, the AMT200P covers the band that a large compression driver would otherwise handle in a PA cabinet, but without a compression chamber and the distortion that comes with it at high level. 18Sound refers to NSD technology here.

Use and enclosure

The AMT200P is aimed at horn systems, at hybrid designs pairing an AMT with a cone midrange, and at large hi-fi builds using high-sensitivity PA woofers. Do not cross below the recommended 1.2 kHz and use a high-pass of at least 12 dB/oct.; in active systems a 24 dB/oct. Linkwitz-Riley filter keeps the driver far more relaxed because excursion and thermal load fall off quickly below the crossover. With filtered programme, 60 W AES leaves adequate headroom for medium-sized reinforcement.

At 16 Ω the AMT200P works with any amplifier. Voltage sensitivity is lower than it would be for an 8 Ω version, but two units can run in parallel on one channel without dropping below 8 Ω. The 81 mm mounting depth and 3.4 kg call for a rigid baffle and proper fixings. Dispersion is wide horizontally and narrow vertically, so mount it upright. For coupling to a horn or waveguide, see the Horns & Waveguides category from 18Sound; the datasheet PDF and the driver database are ready at 42.audio.

What to look out for

  • 16 Ω: two drivers in parallel make 8 Ω, handy for dual arrangements and arrays.
  • 103.5 dB: level matching to the woofer is usually required, via a voltage divider in passive networks.
  • Crossover from 1.2 kHz, high-pass at least 12 dB/oct.
  • 3.4 kg and 81 mm depth: size the baffle accordingly.
  • Polyester diaphragm, 60 W AES for filtered signal above the crossover.

Frequently asked questions

Can the AMT200P replace a compression driver on a horn?

In many two-way PA concepts, yes: from 1.2 kHz upwards it delivers compression-driver level output at 103.5 dB, without phase plug or compression chamber. It cannot be used below 800 Hz, so the woofer or midrange has to play cleanly up to that point.

Which amplifier suits the AMT200P?

A channel that is stable into 16 Ω; in active systems a small one is enough. A steep high-pass and a limiter matter more than power, because at 103.5 dB a few watts already get very loud.

How does the AMT200P differ from the compact AMT in the series?

The compact sibling is light, shallow and far less sensitive, intended for hi-fi and studio use. The AMT200P at 3.4 kg and 81 mm depth is the large model for horn and hybrid systems with high output demands. Both start at 800 Hz and the manufacturer crosses both at 1.2 kHz.
