18SOUND FMT200: flat front plate for the AMT 200, mounting without horn loading
The 18SOUND FMT200 is not a sound source but an accessory: a flat front plate for the AMT 200 air-motion transformer from Eighteen Sound. The AMT itself consists of the magnet system and a pleated diaphragm; how it radiates is decided by the part in front of it. With the FMT200 you mount the AMT 200 flush in a baffle, without a horn and without a waveguide.
This is the option for anyone who wants to use the AMT as neutrally and widely radiating as possible. A horn raises sensitivity at the bottom of the working range and narrows the dispersion, but it also changes the frequency response and demands careful matching. The flat plate lets the driver behave as its diaphragm format dictates: the narrow, tall diaphragm gives wide horizontal and narrower vertical dispersion. For studio monitors, home loudspeakers and near-field use this is often the better choice than the horn version.
Use and enclosure
You use the FMT200 when the AMT 200 is to work in a classic box with a flat baffle: as a tweeter above a midrange or mid-woofer, where a horn would be too much both visually and acoustically. The plate defines the cut-out and the termination to the baffle; make sure the mounting is flat and airtight so no edges or gaps affect the top octave. A chamfer or round-over on the baffle edges further reduces diffraction.
The crossover to the next way depends on the AMT 200 itself, not on the plate; without horn loading there is no lift at the bottom of the range, so you should set the crossover frequency higher than you would with the horn version. For the same diaphragm 18Sound offers the XMT200 horn from the same family; which solution fits depends on whether you need level and directivity or width and neutrality. You will find both at 42.audio in the Horns & Waveguides category.
What to look out for
- Only for the 18Sound AMT 200, not a universal accessory
- Flat design: flush baffle mounting, no horn gain
- Plan a higher crossover frequency than with a horn
- Chamfer the baffle edges to avoid diffraction with flush mounting
Frequently asked questions
Do I necessarily need the FMT200 for the AMT 200?
The AMT needs a front that defines the opening and allows mounting. The FMT200 is the flat solution; the alternative is the XMT200 horn from the same series. Without one of the two the installation is not clean.
How does the sound change compared with the horn?
Without a horn the AMT radiates more widely and has less output at the bottom of its working range. In return, horn-related colouration disappears, and the transition to the midrange is often more homogeneous with wide dispersion.
Does the FMT200 fit other AMTs?
No. The plate is matched to the opening and bolt pattern of the AMT 200. It is not intended for other drivers, even if the dimensions look similar at first glance.
