18SOUND H860 3D Print: 1.4" horn with 80°x60° coverage from the 3D printer
The H860 3D Print is a horn for compression drivers with a 1.4" throat that Eighteen Sound manufactures by 3D printing. Instead of an injection mould, which only pays off at high volumes, the horn is built additively; that allows complex internal contours and small production runs. Coverage of 80° horizontal and 60° vertical is the classic format for full-range tops that need to cover a room in width without wasting too much energy on ceiling and floor.
In the 18Sound range the H860 sits between the aluminium horns and the plastic waveguides. For you as a designer the combination of a 1.4" throat and 80°x60° is interesting because this throat size admits drivers with larger diaphragms that cross over lower than 1" models. That lets you take the woofer out of the midrange earlier, where large cones start to beam.
Use and enclosure
The horn is intended for tops, monitors and installation loudspeakers with a 1.4" driver above a woofer in the usual top-cabinet format. You will find suitable drivers at 42.audio in the 18Sound compression driver category, filtered for 1.4" throat; throat diameter and bolt pattern must match the horn. The 80°x60° pattern suits venues where a single top has to cover a wide area, such as clubs, small halls and side-fill monitoring.
The crossover frequency depends on the driver and the horn mouth size: the larger the mouth, the lower the horn keeps dispersion under control. Cross over so that the driver works well above its resonance and the horn already controls directivity in the transition region. With the 3D-printed part, support the horn across its full flange at the baffle and do not overtighten the bolts. Aluminium or printed part, the acoustic job is the same; the 3D-print horn is the lighter and more flexibly produced option.
What to look out for
- 1.4" throat: combine only with 1.4" compression drivers, avoid adapters
- 80°x60°: wide horizontally, limited vertically, good for tops and monitors
- 3D print: tighten bolts with care, support the horn fully at the baffle
- Choose the crossover by driver and horn mouth, not by power rating alone
Frequently asked questions
Which drivers fit the H860?
All 18Sound compression drivers with a 1.4" throat, neodymium as well as ferrite models. Throat diameter and bolt pattern must match; a 1" or 2" driver does not belong on this horn.
Is a 3D-printed horn robust enough for stage and touring?
For tops and installations yes, provided it is mounted properly. The horn is carried by the baffle, and point loads at the bolts must be avoided. If you load and stack daily, design the mounting generously.
When is a narrower horn the better choice?
When you need throw or are covering reverberant rooms. A tighter horn projects further and excites the side walls less; the H860 with 80°x60° covers more widely and is the better fit for near-field and wide rooms.
