18Sound HD1030: 1" compression driver with titanium diaphragm and 106 dB for compact tops
The 18Sound HD1030 is a 1" compression driver from the Eighteen Sound HD series with a ferrite magnet and titanium dome. The voice coil measures 1.35", the impedance is 8 Ω and the power rating is 30 W AES. With 106 dB sensitivity and a frequency range of 1.8 to 20 kHz it covers the complete treble band of a two-way system.
Within the HD series, the HD1030 is the titanium model with the smaller voice coil. Titanium as a diaphragm material combines high stiffness with low mass, which shows up as clean behaviour in the top octave. Ferrite instead of neodymium means the driver is not exactly light at 1 kg, but it stays thermally forgiving and unaffected by temperature swings. The housing is short at 51 mm mounting depth, which helps in shallow horn-loaded cabinets.
Use and enclosure
The 1" throat with a 25 mm exit fits all 1" horns. From the 18Sound range at 42.audio, candidates are the 1" horns in aluminium and plastic as well as the 1" waveguide from the horns and waveguides category. Which horn you choose depends on the coverage pattern you need and on the horn's lower cutoff, which should always sit above the driver's recommended crossover frequency.
The recommended crossover starts at 1.8 kHz. With 30 W AES the HD1030 is not a driver for low crossover points and shallow filters; it wants a steep high-pass above its lower limit. It makes sense in two-way tops with a 12" mid-woofer, in stage monitors and in small PA boxes where 106 dB sensitivity leaves enough headroom over the woofer.
What to look out for
- 8 Ω nominal impedance, works with any common amplifier and passive crossover
- 30 W AES power rating: use a steep high-pass and do not cross below 1.8 kHz
- 51 mm mounting depth, 1 kg weight due to the ferrite magnet
- 1.35" voice coil with titanium diaphragm for clean treble up to 20 kHz
- 25 mm exit for all 1" horns
Frequently asked questions
Which horn fits the HD1030?
Any 1" horn with a matching bolt pattern. At 42.audio you will find the 18Sound 1" horns with different coverage angles in the horns and waveguides category. Make sure the horn's lower cutoff is above your crossover frequency.
How low can I cross the HD1030?
The recommendation is 1.8 kHz. With a steep filter and moderate levels this works well; at high loads you should go higher, because 30 W AES is not a lot of headroom.
What is the difference between the HD1030 and the larger titanium model of the series?
Both use a titanium diaphragm and a ferrite magnet, but the larger sibling has a wider voice coil and handles more power. The HD1030 is the more compact and lighter option for smaller boxes.
