18Sound HD1040: 1" driver with polyethylene diaphragm, 1.75" coil and 107 dB
If you prefer a soft rather than a metallic character in the treble, the 18Sound HD1040 is where you end up. This 1" compression driver from the HD series uses a treated polyethylene diaphragm instead of titanium. Polymer diaphragms inherently damp break-up resonances in the top range, which translates into a more balanced, less edgy sound. The trade-off is slightly less extension at the very top; the frequency range here runs from 1.6 to 20 kHz.
Technically, a ferrite magnet drives a 1.75" voice coil. The power rating is 40 W AES, the sensitivity 107 dB and the impedance 8 Ω. At 1.6 kg and 60 mm mounting depth the HD1040 is a solid, by no means dainty piece, as is typical for ferrite drivers with this coil size.
Use and enclosure
The larger coil compared with the smaller 1" models of the series allows a lower crossover: 1.6 kHz is the recommended lower limit. In practice that means a high-pass well above this mark if the driver has to play loud for long periods, or just above it with a steep filter in a system with controlled levels. For two-way tops with a 12" mid-woofer this is a comfortable starting point.
The exit measures 25 mm, the standard for 1" horns. At 42.audio the matching options are the 18Sound 1" horns and the 1" waveguide in the horns and waveguides category. For speech reinforcement, installations and small live stages where a non-fatiguing treble that holds up over long sessions matters, the polyethylene diaphragm of the HD1040 is the right decision.
What to look out for
- Polyethylene diaphragm: forgiving treble without metallic character
- 1.75" voice coil, 40 W AES, crossover possible from 1.6 kHz
- 8 Ω, 107 dB sensitivity, suits common PA amplifiers
- Ferrite magnet, 1.6 kg weight, allow for 60 mm mounting depth
- 25 mm exit, standard 1" horn interface
Frequently asked questions
Is the HD1040 suitable for speech reinforcement?
Yes, this is exactly its territory. The polyethylene diaphragm sounds less sharp than titanium, which is pleasant for speech and long operating hours. With 107 dB sensitivity there is enough headroom for typical installations.
What crossover do I need?
A high-pass from 1.6 kHz, preferably a bit higher, with a steep slope. The driver is 8 Ω, so passive crossovers work without special design. With active crossovers, set limiters for 40 W AES.
HD1040 or the titanium sibling, what is the difference?
Same voice coil, same ferrite motor, but the sibling model has a titanium diaphragm and a higher power rating. The HD1040 sounds softer and is the choice when tonal character matters more than maximum power handling.
