18Sound HD1050: 1" compression driver with titanium dome, 1.75" coil and 50 W AES
At 50 W AES, the 18Sound HD1050 is the most powerful 1" ferrite driver in the HD series. It pairs a titanium diaphragm with a 1.75" voice coil, which makes it a candidate for tops that have to take more treble level than small monitor boxes. Sensitivity 107 dB, impedance 8 Ω, frequency range 1.6 to 20 kHz.
Titanium is the standard material in PA when power handling and detail resolution are the priorities. The diaphragm keeps its shape at high excursion, and the large coil spreads heat over more surface than a narrower winding. Ferrite puts 1.6 kg on the scale, and with 60 mm mounting depth the HD1050 needs some room behind the horn. For fixed installations that barely matters; for touring boxes you have to plan for it.
Use and enclosure
The HD1050 wants a 1" horn with a 25 mm throat. Matching 1" horns and waveguides from 18Sound are listed at 42.audio in the horns and waveguides category. Constant-directivity horns are a good match for titanium diaphragms because their treble equalisation compensates for the diaphragm's typical characteristic.
The stated lower crossover frequency is 1.4 kHz; operation is more comfortable from 1.6 kHz, where the specified frequency range begins. In a two-way top with a 12" mid-woofer this is ideal, because the woofer still beams cleanly there and the transition to the horn works without a jump in directivity. With 50 W AES the driver also suits systems that regularly run at the limit.
What to look out for
- 50 W AES: the highest power rating among the 1" ferrite drivers of the HD series
- Titanium dome with 1.75" voice coil, 107 dB sensitivity
- 8 Ω, crossover possible from 1.4 kHz, recommended from 1.6 kHz
- 1.6 kg and 60 mm mounting depth: the ferrite motor needs space and support
- 25 mm exit for 1" horns
Frequently asked questions
Can I cross the HD1050 at 1.4 kHz?
That is the stated lower limit and feasible with a steep filter. If you regularly push the driver hard, go to 1.6 kHz or above to keep diaphragm excursion in the safe zone.
Which amplifier fits?
The HD1050 is 8 Ω and rated at 50 W AES. A small amplifier is enough for the treble channel; what matters is a clean limiter so clipping does not overrun the driver thermally.
When is the polyethylene variant the better choice?
When you prefer a softer treble and do not need 50 W AES. The sibling model has the same coil and motor but a polyethylene diaphragm and a somewhat lower power rating.
