18Sound HD125: lightweight 1" compression driver with 109 dB and 0.8 kg
A 1" compression driver that fits practically any box at 0.8 kg and 46 mm mounting depth: that is the 18Sound HD125. The HD series is Eighteen Sound's ferrite line, and the HD125 is its smallest model with a 1" voice coil and treated polyethylene diaphragm. Despite the compact format the sensitivity is 109 dB, which is remarkable for a driver of this size.
The power rating is 25 W AES, the impedance 8 Ω, and the frequency range runs from 2 to 18 kHz. The polyethylene diaphragm delivers an unobtrusive treble that is pleasant on speech, but gives up the final octave that titanium diaphragms provide. For applications where intelligibility and robustness count, that is a sensible design choice.
Use and enclosure
The HD125 belongs in small two-way boxes, monitors, speech reinforcement and installations where weight and space are limited. The recommended crossover is 2.5 kHz, which suits a small mid-woofer that still works cleanly that high. With 25 W AES a steep high-pass is mandatory; a shallow filter would build up heat too early in a coil this small.
The 25 mm exit accepts any 1" horn. At 42.audio you will find the 18Sound 1" horns and the 1" waveguide in the horns and waveguides category. Because the driver itself is so short, you can choose shallow horns without the overall depth of the box getting out of hand.
What to look out for
- 0.8 kg and 46 mm mounting depth: the most compact ferrite driver in the HD series
- 109 dB sensitivity at 8 Ω, lots of level from little power
- 25 W AES: steep high-pass from 2.5 kHz, do not cross lower
- Polyethylene diaphragm, frequency range 2 to 18 kHz
- 1" voice coil, 25 mm exit for all 1" horns
Frequently asked questions
Which boxes is the HD125 intended for?
Small two-way systems, monitors and speech reinforcement. Its low weight and short build make it the first choice when the box has to stay light and shallow.
How high do I need to cross the HD125?
2.5 kHz with a steep filter is recommended. The frequency range starts at 2 kHz, but with 25 W AES and a 1" coil, headroom matters more than a low crossover.
Is a small amplifier enough?
Yes. With 109 dB sensitivity and 8 Ω, little power gives high level. A limiter that respects the 25 W AES rating is more useful with active drive than a big amp.
