18Sound HD2020: 2" compression driver with 2.4" titanium diaphragm for 2" horns

Not every two-way system needs a 3" diaphragm, but many existing horns simply have a 2" throat. For that case there is the 18Sound HD2020: a ferrite driver from the HD series with a 2" horn interface, titanium dome and 2.4" voice coil. It delivers 108 dB sensitivity at 8 Ω and handles 70 W AES.

The frequency range extends from 1 to 20 kHz. Compared with the 3" models, the 2.4" diaphragm is lighter and therefore reaches the top octave with less effort, while it still offers enough area in the midrange for a crossover around 1.2 kHz. The 2" interface requires a longer throat inside the driver: at 100 mm mounting depth the HD2020 is the longest model in the series, and the weight is 3 kg.

Use and enclosure

The lower limit for the crossover is stated as 1.2 kHz. That is the region where a 12" woofer in a two-way top still radiates cleanly, so the transition to the horn works without a directivity jump. For applications with high continuous load you should cross a bit higher and protect the 70 W AES with a limiter.

The exit measures 51 mm, fitting all 2" horns. At 42.audio you will find the matching 18Sound 2" horn in the horns and waveguides category. When designing the cabinet, allow for the 100 mm mounting depth plus horn length; together that makes a deep box.

What to look out for

  • 2" horn interface with 51 mm exit for 2" horns
  • 2.4" titanium diaphragm, crossover recommended from 1.2 kHz
  • 70 W AES at 108 dB and 8 Ω
  • 100 mm mounting depth: the longest model in the HD series
  • 3 kg weight due to the ferrite magnet

Frequently asked questions

Why a 2" interface with a 2.4" diaphragm?

Because many horns have a 2" throat. The HD2020 lets you drive an existing 2" horn with a lighter driver that runs cleaner at the top than the big 3" models.

At which frequency do I cross the HD2020?

From 1.2 kHz with a steep filter. For continuous operation at the limit, go somewhat higher so diaphragm excursion stays small and the 70 W AES are not pushed thermally.

What is the difference to the 3" model with 2" interface?

The large sibling has a 3" diaphragm, more power handling and can be crossed lower. The HD2020 is more compact in diameter and lighter, but needs more mounting depth.

At 42.audio you get the 18SOUND HD2020 with datasheet PDF, all key data in the driver database. More drivers from this manufacturer: Atlas 18Sound.
