18Sound ND1020: compact 1" neodymium driver with polyethylene diaphragm and 108.5 dB
0.7 kg, 40 mm mounting depth, 108.5 dB sensitivity. The 18Sound ND1020 shows what a neodymium motor does for a 1" compression driver. The ND series is Eighteen Sound's neodymium line, and the ND1020 is a small model within it with a treated polyethylene diaphragm and a 1.38" voice coil. Power rating 30 W AES, impedance 8 Ω, frequency range 1.6 to 20 kHz.
The polyethylene diaphragm is the reason the ND1020 sounds softer and less obtrusive in the treble than the titanium models of the series. For speech, background music and small music systems that is an advantage, because the treble does not fatigue even over longer listening. The short build and low weight also make it a driver you can fit practically anywhere.
Use and enclosure
Crossover from 1.6 kHz with a steep high-pass, preferably a bit above that in continuous operation: that is the frame for the ND1020. With 30 W AES it is not a driver for loud stage tops but for compact two-way boxes, columns, ceiling speakers and monitors, where the 108.5 dB sensitivity ensures that little amplifier power is enough.
The 25 mm exit takes any 1" horn. The matching 18Sound 1" horns and the shallow 1" waveguide are listed at 42.audio under horns and waveguides. Together with the waveguide you get a very shallow treble section that fits into boxes where a ferrite driver would simply not have room.
What to look out for
- 0.7 kg and 40 mm mounting depth thanks to the neodymium magnet
- 108.5 dB sensitivity at 8 Ω, frugal in amplifier demand
- 30 W AES: plan a steep high-pass from 1.6 kHz
- Polyethylene diaphragm for a soft, non-fatiguing treble
- 25 mm exit for 1" horns
Frequently asked questions
Is the ND1020 suitable for speech reinforcement and installation?
Yes, that is exactly what it is meant for. Polyethylene diaphragm, low weight and 108.5 dB sensitivity make it the driver for columns, ceiling boxes and small two-way systems.
Which crossover and which amplifier?
A steep high-pass from 1.6 kHz, uncritical for passive crossovers at 8 Ω. A small amplifier is enough; a limiter at 30 W AES makes sense with active drive.
ND1020 or the ND-series titanium model with the larger coil?
The titanium model has a larger diaphragm, more power handling and a bit more weight. The ND1020 is the smaller, lighter variant with a softer tonal character.
