18Sound ND1070: 1" driver with 1.75" coil, 109 dB and variants in 8, 16 and 24 Ω
Anyone running compression drivers in groups quickly hits the impedance problem: several 8 Ω drivers in parallel push the load below what a power amplifier likes. This is exactly where the 18Sound ND1070 comes in. The 1" compression driver from the ND range is available in 8, 16 and 24 Ω; 42.audio lists the 8 Ω version. Neodymium magnet, 1.75" voice coil and titanium dome deliver 109 dB sensitivity and 50 W AES power handling.
Eighteen Sound positions the ND1070 as a versatile workhorse for two-way systems, columns and array elements. At 1.1 kg and 53 mm mounting depth it is built more substantially than the lightweight entry models of the range, which points to a larger magnet structure and more thermal mass – both help under continuous load. The operating range starts at 1.6 kHz and extends to 20,000 Hz.
Use and enclosure
The 25 mm throat exit fits all 1" horns from 18Sound in the Horns & Waveguides category at 42.audio. For columns and line sources the 24 Ω variant is worth considering: three drivers in parallel come back to 8 Ω, as do two 16 Ω drivers – groups can thus be driven from a normal amplifier channel without matching transformers.
The recommended crossover of 1.6 kHz marks the lower limit. For high continuous levels in PA tops, set the high-pass a little higher and with a steep slope; in monitors or hi-fi hybrids that rarely run at the limit, the crossover may move closer to the recommendation. The 1.75" coil handles 50 W AES, which can be safely exploited even in continuous use with a limiter in the active HF channel.
What to look out for
- 8 Ω in the shop; 16 and 24 Ω variants exist for parallel wiring in line sources and arrays.
- 53 mm mounting depth, 1.1 kg: allow space behind the horn and support the weight at the throat.
- 109 dB and 50 W AES: far louder than any woofer – level matching is mandatory.
- Titanium dome on a 1.75" coil: high stiffness, response up to 20,000 Hz.
Frequently asked questions
Which impedance should I pick for a column with three drivers?
Three 24 Ω drivers in parallel give 8 Ω, an uncritical load. With 8 Ω drivers the load would sit just under 3 Ω, which many amplifiers no longer drive cleanly. Ask 42.audio about the impedance variants.
Is the ND1070 suitable for hi-fi horn speakers?
Yes. On a waveguide with wide coverage and a crossover around the recommendation, the titanium dome plays cleanly up to 20,000 Hz. The high sensitivity does require substantial attenuation relative to the woofer.
How does this driver differ from the lighter 1" models in the ND range?
More mass and mounting depth (1.1 kg, 53 mm) with the same coil size. The construction has more thermal reserve for continuous operation. The datasheet PDF and driver database at 42.audio show the details.
