18Sound ND1075: 1" neodymium driver with titanium dome, 108 dB and 50 W AES
The 18Sound ND1075 is all about a solid basic package: titanium dome, 1.75" voice coil and a neodymium magnet system at 8 Ω. With this, the 1" compression driver from the ND range reaches 108 dB sensitivity, handles 50 W AES and covers 1.6 kHz to 20,000 Hz.
Titanium is stiff and light but poorly damped – which is why designers value the material for a precise, open top end, yet have to keep diaphragm resonances at the upper limit under control with horn and filter. Eighteen Sound designed the ND1075 as a universal 1" driver for two-way tops, stage monitors and fixed installations. At 1.1 kg and 53 mm mounting depth it belongs to the sturdier part of the range, which prioritises thermal reserve over minimum weight.
Use and enclosure
The 25 mm throat exit corresponds to the 1" standard; matching horns and waveguides from 18Sound are listed at 42.audio in the Horns & Waveguides category. For PA tops a horn with controlled coverage that holds directivity down to the crossover frequency is recommended; for monitors and hi-fi, a short waveguide is more appropriate.
Do not cross over below 1.6 kHz. With 50 W AES the 1.75" coil handles a fair amount of power, but the stress on a compression driver rises steeply towards its lower limit: the lower the crossover, the greater the diaphragm excursion at the same level. A high-pass at 24 dB/octave above the recommendation and a limiter in the active channel are the sensible safeguards. In passive operation a series protection capacitor ahead of the actual filter helps.
What to look out for
- 108 dB at 8 Ω: a small amplifier is enough; reduce level to the woofer via L-pad or DSP.
- Titanium dome: high stiffness, clear treble up to 20,000 Hz; control resonances with filter and horn.
- 1.75" voice coil with 50 W AES: crossover from 1.6 kHz, preferably a little higher.
- 1.1 kg and 53 mm mounting depth: solid magnet structure, allow room in the cabinet.
Frequently asked questions
Is the ND1075 suitable for stage monitors?
Yes. 108 dB sensitivity and 50 W AES provide enough level for wedges, and the neodymium motor keeps the weight at 1.1 kg. A DSP with limiter is advisable in monitor use because feedback quickly overheats the HF coil.
Which amplifier should I use?
A clean channel at 8 Ω with a high-pass in front of it. The required power is low; what matters is that no low-frequency signals below the crossover get through.
Passive or active crossover?
Both work. Active allows a limiter and a precise crossover at 1.6 kHz or above; passive requires a high-pass with sufficient slope and an attenuation network. The curves from the datasheet PDF at 42.audio help with the filter design.
