18Sound ND1P: compact 1" compression driver with polyethylene dome and 109 dB

The 18Sound ND1P is a 1" compression driver from the ND series with a neodymium motor, treated polyethylene diaphragm and 1.75" voice coil. At only 85 mm outer diameter and 46 mm mounting depth it is one of the smallest drivers in its class and weighs just 0.9 kg. It was designed for compact two-way cabinets, stage monitors, column speakers and installation boxes where a titanium driver either sounds too aggressive or simply does not fit into the enclosure.

Within the 1" class, the ratio of size to efficiency stands out: 109 dB sensitivity at 8 Ω (a 16 Ω version is also available) and 50 W AES power handling. Polyethylene as a diaphragm material brings high internal damping. The break-up resonances that show up as sharp peaks in the presence region with metal domes are soft and spread out here. The result is a driver that behaves well in the speech intelligibility range and gets by with a simple crossover; in return, the top-end extension does not reach quite as high as the titanium sibling ND1TP.

Use and enclosure

The horn throat is 1" (25 mm exit). From the 18Sound range this matches every 1" model in the horns and waveguides category. For wide near-field coverage in monitors a wide-opening horn is the obvious choice, for long throw in tops rather a narrower one. The small diameter of the driver is a real advantage when the horn has to sit right next to a woofer and the distance between the acoustic centres must stay short.

The recommended crossover point is 1.6 kHz, which is also the lower limit of the operating range. Anyone crossing there should use a steep filter (24 dB/octave active or a properly calculated passive network with at least 12 dB/octave) and not go any shallower on the high-pass. More distance from that limit protects the 1.75" coil and moves the 50 W AES into a region where they are fully usable. For a compact 2-way box with a small woofer this is the classic configuration.

What to look out for

  • Impedance 8 Ω, alternatively 16 Ω: works with any PA amplifier channel, 16 Ω makes sense for parallel wiring.
  • Mounting depth 46 mm, outer diameter 85 mm: fits behind shallow horns and inside narrow columns.
  • Weight 0.9 kg thanks to the neodymium magnet: practically no added load for flown tops.
  • 1.75" voice coil and 50 W AES: do not cross below 1.6 kHz, choose a sufficiently steep filter.
  • Polyethylene dome: soft damping, no metallic resonances, slightly less top-end reach than titanium.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the ND1P and the ND1TP?

Both share the housing, neodymium motor, 1.75" coil and the 1" throat. The ND1P has a treated polyethylene diaphragm, the ND1TP a titanium dome. Polyethylene sounds rounder and is less critical in the presence region, titanium reaches higher and plays a touch louder.

Which amplifier suits the ND1P?

With 109 dB sensitivity the driver needs very little power. An amplifier channel delivering considerably more than the 50 W AES into 8 Ω is not a problem as long as the crossover sits at 1.6 kHz or above and a limiter protects the high-frequency band. The high-pass is what matters, not the amplifier rating.

Which cabinets is the ND1P suited for?

Typical uses are compact two-way tops and monitors with small to medium woofers, plus installation speakers where weight and depth count. Combined with a wide-dispersion 1" horn from 18Sound you get a small, wide-dispersion system; 42.audio provides the datasheet PDF and the driver database for planning.
