18Sound ND1TP: 1" compression driver with titanium dome, 110 dB and 85 mm size

Little space, plenty of output: the 18Sound ND1TP packs a neodymium motor, a titanium dome and a 1.75" voice coil into a housing only 85 mm in diameter. It is the titanium counterpart to the ND1P in the ND series and targets compact tops, monitors and line-array style columns where a 1" driver with the widest possible high-frequency extension is needed without adding weight or depth.

The figures are remarkable for the size: 110 dB sensitivity at 8 Ω, 50 W AES power handling, 46 mm mounting depth and 0.9 kg weight. Titanium is stiff and light, which is why the first break-up mode of the dome sits high and the driver resolves right up to the upper end of the audible range. That stiffness is also the reason titanium drivers sound more direct and brighter in the presence region than polymer diaphragms. If you like that character or equalise it with DSP, the ND1TP gives you a very small driver with the resolution of a considerably larger class.

Use and enclosure

As a 1" driver with a 25 mm exit, the ND1TP fits all 1" horns and waveguides from 18Sound, from wide-coverage models for monitors through narrower horns for long throw to the waveguide for designs focused on smooth off-axis behaviour. The short depth lets you bring the horn close to the baffle and mount the driver in cabinets where a larger neodymium driver would hit the rear panel.

For the crossover, 1.6 kHz is both the recommendation and the lower limit. Practical options are an active crossover at 24 dB/octave right there, or a passive network at 12 dB/octave set somewhat higher. The 50 W AES is the continuous rating above the recommended crossover; below it, excursion of the 1.75" coil rises quickly. In a two-way box with a mid-sized woofer the ND1TP covers the entire high-frequency range and, thanks to 110 dB, needs very little amplifier power.

What to look out for

  • 8 Ω (also available as 16 Ω): high sensitivity, so plan level matching to the woofer in the crossover.
  • Only 85 mm diameter and 46 mm mounting depth: suited to narrow columns and shallow tops.
  • 0.9 kg weight: neodymium instead of ferrite, good for flown boxes and portable systems.
  • Titanium dome on a 1.75" coil: extended highs, tame the presence region with EQ if needed.
  • Do not cross below 1.6 kHz, use a steep high-pass and set a limiter.

Frequently asked questions

ND1TP or ND1P, titanium or polyethylene?

The ND1TP delivers 110 dB and reaches further in the treble, while the polyethylene ND1P sounds softer and is hardly any quieter. For music playback with high detail demands and DSP equalisation titanium is the choice; for speech and simple passive crossovers polyethylene is the safer bet.

Which horn fits the ND1TP?

Any 1" horn with the matching bolt pattern, from the 18Sound range the models in the horns and waveguides category. The choice depends on the desired coverage: wide for monitors and near field, narrow for long-throw tops.

How much amplifier power makes sense?

At 110 dB a few watts give high levels. More important than nominal power is a high-pass at 1.6 kHz or above plus a limiter that safeguards the 50 W AES. 42.audio offers the datasheet as a PDF and the driver database for comparison within the ND series.
