18Sound ND2T: 1.4" compression driver with titanium dome, 2.4" coil and 110 dB
Between the 1" drivers and the large 2" models of the ND series sits the 18Sound ND2T: a 1.4" compression driver with 36 mm exit, titanium diaphragm on a 2.4" voice coil and neodymium magnet. At 76 mm mounting depth and 1.5 kg it stays manageable, yet delivers 110 dB sensitivity at 8 Ω and 80 W AES power handling. That makes it the typical high-frequency unit for mid-sized two-way tops that need more output and a lower crossover than a 1" driver can give, without carrying the weight of a 2" system.
The 2.4" coil is the decisive difference from the 1" class: more diaphragm area, more thermal capacity, less excursion at a given frequency. This allows a recommended crossover of 1.2 kHz and an operating band up to 20,000 Hz. Titanium keeps the first break-up mode high, so the treble stays extended despite the larger diaphragm. In the presence region the ND2T sounds direct and strong like all titanium drivers, which is easy to exploit with DSP.
Use and enclosure
The 1.4" throat opens up a wide horn selection at 18Sound in the horns and waveguides category: models for directional coverage, wider-coverage horns, long-throw horns, a 3D-printed horn and an aluminium waveguide. The choice depends on room and distance. For tops that have to cover a hall, a narrower horn makes sense; for near field and monitors a wider one. A larger horn also helps to control the coverage down to the crossover frequency.
The crossover should be at 1.2 kHz or above, active at 24 dB/octave right at the recommendation, passive at least 12 dB/octave with a somewhat higher corner. The 80 W AES applies above this limit. Suitable partners are mid-sized woofers in two-way tops that still play cleanly up to 1.2 kHz. At 110 dB the driver sits well above the efficiency of typical woofers, so plan for level matching in the DSP or an L-pad in a passive crossover.
What to look out for
- 8 Ω or 16 Ω: at 110 dB sensitivity provide level matching to the woofer.
- 1.5 kg and 76 mm mounting depth: lighter than a 2" driver, fits compact tops.
- 2.4" voice coil with 80 W AES: cross from 1.2 kHz, use steep filters.
- Titanium dome: band up to 20,000 Hz, adjust the presence region with EQ if needed.
- Neodymium magnet: strong drive at low weight, robust in continuous operation when a limiter is used.
Frequently asked questions
Why a 1.4" driver instead of 1" or 2"?
The ND2T crosses lower than a 1" driver at 1.2 kHz and relieves the woofer in the upper midrange, yet at 1.5 kg weighs considerably less than a 2" model with a 3" coil. For mid-sized tops this is the best compromise between output, weight and horn selection.
Which horn is recommended for the ND2T?
All 1.4" horns and waveguides from 18Sound fit, from the narrow long-throw horn to the aluminium waveguide. Narrow coverage for long throw, wide for near field. The datasheet PDF and driver database at 42.audio help with the comparison.
How much amplifier power does the ND2T need?
Little. With 110 dB it produces high levels from a few watts. A channel with roughly twice the 80 W AES into 8 Ω is common, always with a limiter and a high-pass at 1.2 kHz or higher.
