18Sound ND4014Ti2: 1.4" compression driver with 4" voice coil and titanium diaphragm
A 4" voice coil behind a 1.4" exit: the ND4014Ti2 by 18Sound (Eighteen Sound) is one of the large-format neodymium drivers in the ND series. The larger coil diameter brings more diaphragm area, more winding surface for heat dissipation and more motor force – properties that qualify a driver for low crossover points and high continuous levels. The exit stays compact at 1.4", so the driver fits common 1.4" horns instead of demanding a 2" horn.
The diaphragm is titanium. With a 4" dome the challenge is to keep stiffness across the large area so the diaphragm moves as a whole rather than in zones at high frequencies – dome shape and phase-plug geometry take care of that by equalising the path from rim to centre. Electrically the driver is rated at 8 Ω; the magnet assembly uses neodymium.
Use and enclosure
The ND4014Ti2 is the candidate for two-way systems in which the horn should start as low as possible: large tops with high demands on midrange reproduction, domestic horn systems where a single driver handles the whole mid-high band, or installations with long operating hours. Matching 1.4" horns from the same manufacturer are the XT1464, XR1464C, XR1496C, PR614 and H860 3D Print as well as the XG14 Alu waveguide – for a low crossover a horn with a large mouth is the prerequisite.
Set the crossover frequency well above the horn's lower limit, with a high-pass of at least 24 dB/octave. A 4" diaphragm has more moving mass than a 3" dome; the treble above the presence region therefore benefits from clean DSP equalisation. Limiter and high-pass ahead of the power amp are not an extra with a driver of this size, they are a requirement.
What to look out for
- 8 Ω nominal – standard load; a driver of this class needs no big power amp, but it does need a limiter.
- 4" voice coil – high thermal reserve, but also more mass: plan for DSP equalisation in the treble.
- 1.4" exit – fits 1.4" horns, no 2" horn required.
- Titanium diaphragm – rugged in PA use; replaceable with the original part when needed.
- Neodymium magnet – lower weight than a ferrite driver with a 4" coil.
Frequently asked questions
What does the 4" coil offer over 3"?
More diaphragm area and more motor force mean less excursion per level and less distortion at the bottom of the working range. That lets the horn start lower than with a 3" driver such as the ND3ST. In the top octave the smaller diaphragm has the advantage, which DSP can compensate.
Which horn?
A 1.4" horn with a large mouth if the low crossover is to be used: XT1464, XR1464C or XR1496C from 18Sound. For monitors the XG14 Alu. The coverage angles are listed with the horns.
Is a small amplifier enough?
Yes. Compression drivers of this class need little power, but they need a limiter and a high-pass ahead of the power amp. Active drive with DSP is the most sensible solution because it also handles the horn equalisation.
