18Sound ND4015Ti2: 1.5" Compression Driver with 4" Titanium Diaphragm and 113 dB
The 18Sound ND4015Ti2 is a neodymium compression driver from the ND series with a 1.5" horn throat (40 mm exit) and a 4" voice coil under a titanium diaphragm. The 1.5" format sits between the common 1.4" and 2" throats: the exit stays narrow enough for controlled directivity at the top end, while the large diaphragm moves the crossover to the midrange lower than any classic 1" driver could.
Within its category the ND4015Ti2 stands out for combining 113 dB sensitivity, 160 W AES power handling and a working range from 0.8 kHz to 20,000 Hz. Add 57 mm mounting depth and 3.2 kg, which is compact for a driver with a 4" coil. The big coil means more conductor length and more surface to shed heat, so it has thermal headroom that smaller motors lack under sustained load.
Use and enclosure
The driver is meant for two-way designs where a large mid-woofer hands over to the high-frequency section as low as possible. The recommended crossover point is 0.8 kHz; in practice use a steep filter (24 dB/octave) and keep some distance from that lower limit at high SPL, because diaphragm excursion rises quickly below the crossover. With 160 W AES the ND4015Ti2 copes with the conditions inside a touring box or a large stage monitor.
Horn selection comes down to the 1.5" throat. Look for a horn with a matching flange or use an adapter; 18Sound horns are listed at 42.audio in the Horns & Waveguides category. The PDF datasheet and the entry in the driver database help you check the fit against a horn you already own.
What to look out for
- 8 Ω impedance: easy for any power amp, but a limiter still makes sense.
- Mounting depth 57 mm, weight 3.2 kg, neodymium magnet.
- 4" voice coil and titanium diaphragm: 160 W AES power handling.
- 1.5" throat with 40 mm exit, not the 1.4" or 2" standard.
- Do not cross below 0.8 kHz; go higher at high SPL.
Frequently asked questions
Which amplifier suits the ND4015Ti2?
With 113 dB sensitivity the driver needs little power to keep up with a bass section. A clean limiter matters more than wattage, since compression drivers usually fail from clipping and crossovers set too low. The 8 Ω load is easy for any amplifier.
Why a 1.5" throat instead of 1.4" or 2"?
The 1.5" throat is a compromise between a low crossover and top-end resolution. Compared with 2", the throat area stays smaller, which helps the upper range, while the 4" diaphragm still works low. The horn has to match the throat exactly, though.
How does the ND4015Ti2 differ from the NSD4015N?
Both share the 1.5" throat, the 4" coil and 160 W AES. The ND4015Ti2 uses a plain titanium diaphragm and reaches 113 dB, while the NSD4015N uses the nitride-coated NSD diaphragm. If you want the loudest driver in this format, take the Ti2; if you prefer the NSD character, take the NSD4015N.
