18Sound NSD1424BTN: 1.4" Driver with 2.4" Coil, 16 Ω and 110 dB
The 18Sound NSD1424BTN is a 1.4" compression driver from the NSD series with a neodymium motor and a 2.4" voice coil. That combination is unusual: a 1.4" throat is normally paired with 3" or 4" coils, but here you get the larger throat format in a driver weighing 1.7 kg with 54 mm mounting depth. NSD stands for the nitride-coated titanium diaphragm that gives this series its smoother top end.
With 110 dB sensitivity, 70 W AES and a working range from 0.8 kHz to 20,000 Hz, the NSD1424BTN is a driver for mid-sized two-way boxes. The impedance is 16 Ω; the model exists in 8 and 16 Ω versions, and the one listed here is the 16 Ω variant. The exit measures 35 mm.
Use and enclosure
The recommended crossover is 1.2 kHz, even though the response extends down to 0.8 kHz. The reason is the 2.4" coil: it is thermally smaller than the 3" coils of the larger NSD drivers, and the lower you cross, the more power ends up in the coil. A 24 dB/octave filter at 1.2 kHz gives you a good compromise between a low handover from a 12" or larger woofer and safe operation.
The 16 Ω rating is an advantage in passive designs: at the same voltage the driver draws half the current of an 8 Ω driver, which relaxes the component ratings in the crossover, and the reduced attenuation relative to the woofer can be handled with simpler voltage dividers. Among the 1.4" horns from 18Sound at 42.audio, the XT1464, XR1464C, XR1496C, PR614, H860 3D Print and the XG14 Alu waveguide are all candidates.
What to look out for
- 16 Ω: half the current draw in active systems, adjust component values in passive crossovers.
- 1.4" throat, 35 mm exit: fits XT1464, XR1464C, XR1496C, PR614, H860, XG14 Alu.
- 70 W AES: cross at 1.2 kHz rather than at the 0.8 kHz limit.
- 1.7 kg, 54 mm mounting depth: lighter than the 3" models in the series.
- 2.4" voice coil under a nitride-coated titanium diaphragm.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the NSD1424BTN have 16 Ω instead of 8 Ω?
The 16 Ω version is intended for systems where several drivers run in parallel or a passive crossover sets the level relative to the woofer. The amplifier delivers less power into 16 Ω, which does not matter at 110 dB sensitivity.
Which horn fits the NSD1424BTN?
Any 18Sound horn with a 1.4" throat from the 42.audio range: XT1464, XR1464C, XR1496C, PR614, H860 3D Print or the XG14 Alu waveguide. For a low crossover around 1.2 kHz a large horn with a low loading frequency matters more than the coverage angle.
How does the NSD1424BTN differ from the NSD1480N?
The NSD1480N has a 3" coil, the NSD1424BTN a 2.4" coil. That makes the 1424BTN lighter and shorter, but it handles less continuous power and should be crossed higher. For smaller 1.4" boxes it is the slimmer solution.
