18Sound NSD1480N: 1.4" Compression Driver with 3" Coil Reaching Down to 0.5 kHz

A 1.4" driver whose response starts at 0.5 kHz: the 18Sound NSD1480N combines a 1.4" horn throat with a 35 mm exit, a 3" voice coil, a neodymium magnet and the nitride-coated titanium diaphragm of the NSD series. The large coil and correspondingly large diaphragm are why it works lower than the smaller drivers in the 1.4" format.

The figures: 111 dB sensitivity, 100 W AES power handling, 8 Ω, working range from 0.5 kHz to 20,000 Hz. For that the NSD1480N weighs 3.1 kg and needs 62 mm of mounting depth. The nitride coating on the diaphragm shifts its resonances upward and keeps the region above the woofer handover calmer than plain titanium does.

Use and enclosure

The crossover recommendation is 0.8 kHz. The distance to the 0.5 kHz lower limit is deliberate: below the crossover a compression driver becomes an excursion device, and excursion is what a titanium diaphragm dislikes. With 24 dB/octave at 0.8 kHz you use the deep lower limit as margin for a clean filter transition, not as an operating range. In a two-way box with a large woofer this is the classic combination; the driver also works well in horn systems with a separate midrange horn.

At 42.audio you will find 1.4" horns from 18Sound for this driver: XT1464 and XR1464C for narrower coverage, XR1496C for wide stages, the PR614, the H860 3D Print and the XG14 Alu waveguide. For operation close to 0.8 kHz the horn needs a sufficiently low loading frequency, otherwise distortion rises despite the right driver.

What to look out for

  • 100 W AES at 8 Ω, 111 dB sensitivity.
  • 1.4" throat, 35 mm exit: matches XT1464, XR1464C, XR1496C, PR614, H860, XG14 Alu.
  • Cross at 0.8 kHz with a steep filter, not at the 0.5 kHz limit.
  • 3.1 kg, 62 mm mounting depth: allow for cabinet depth behind the horn.
  • 3" voice coil, diaphragm made of nitride-coated titanium.

Frequently asked questions

Can I really cross the NSD1480N at 0.5 kHz?

The lower limit marks where the response begins, not where you should cross. The recommendation is 0.8 kHz, which leaves the region below usable as the filter slope. Going lower increases distortion and thermal stress considerably.

Which horn should I choose for a low crossover?

A large 1.4" horn with a low loading frequency. From the 18Sound range at 42.audio, the XT1464, XR1464C and XR1496C are the candidates; the compact XG14 Alu is better suited to higher crossover points.

What sets the NSD1480N apart from the NSD1424BTN?

Both have a 1.4" throat and an NSD diaphragm. The NSD1480N uses a 3" coil and carries more power with a lower limit, while the NSD1424BTN with its 2.4" coil is lighter and shorter and intended for smaller boxes with a higher crossover.

At 42.audio you get the 18SOUND NSD1480N with datasheet PDF, all key data in the driver database. More drivers from this manufacturer: Atlas 18Sound.
