18Sound NSD4014N: 1.4" Compression Driver with 4" Voice Coil and Neodymium
A 4" voice coil behind a 1.4" throat: the 18Sound NSD4014N is the big model of the NSD series in the 1.4" format. Neodymium magnet, 8 Ω and the nitride-coated titanium diaphragm that gives the series its name. The design targets applications where a 1.4" horn is a given, but the driver should bring the power handling and low working limit of a 2" system.
The logic: coil size determines how much heat the motor can shed continuously and how large the diaphragm is. A 4" diaphragm has more area and more mass than a 3" one, so it works lower, but it requires a phase plug that cleanly equalises the path lengths to the 1.4" throat. The nitride layer stiffens the titanium surface and pushes the diaphragm resonances upward, so the top end stays even despite the large diaphragm.
Use and enclosure
The NSD4014N belongs in large two-way boxes where a woofer with a big cone should hand over to the high-frequency section as low as possible, and in mid-high units of horn systems. Set the crossover according to the datasheet and the loading frequency of your horn; the rule of thumb for any compression driver is to work well above the lower limit of the response with a steep filter (24 dB/octave), because excursion below the crossover stresses the diaphragm mechanically.
At 42.audio you will find the matching 18Sound horns with a 1.4" throat: XT1464, XR1464C and XR1496C as classic horns, the PR614, the H860 3D Print and the XG14 Alu waveguide. For a driver with a 4" coil a large horn with a low loading frequency is worth it, otherwise you only use part of its potential. The complete parameters are listed in the 42.audio driver database.
What to look out for
- 1.4" horn throat: fits XT1464, XR1464C, XR1496C, PR614, H860 3D Print, XG14 Alu.
- 4" voice coil: high thermal capacity, low working limit in the 1.4" format.
- 8 Ω impedance, neodymium magnet.
- Diaphragm made of nitride-coated titanium (NSD series).
- Choose a large horn with a low loading frequency to exploit the 4" diaphragm.
Frequently asked questions
What is a 1.4" driver with a 4" coil intended for?
For boxes that get by with a 1.4" horn but need to cross low and handle a lot of power. The 4" coil brings the reserves of a 2" driver, while the 1.4" throat keeps the top-end resolution of a smaller format.
Which horn fits the NSD4014N?
Any 18Sound horn with a 1.4" throat at 42.audio, meaning XT1464, XR1464C, XR1496C, PR614, H860 3D Print or XG14 Alu. For a low crossover the large models XT1464, XR1464C and XR1496C are the better choice.
How does the NSD4014N differ from the NSD1480N?
Both are 1.4" drivers with NSD diaphragm and neodymium. The NSD4014N has a 4" coil, the NSD1480N a 3" coil. The 4014N handles more and works lower, the 1480N is lighter and resolves slightly finer in the uppermost range.
