18Sound NSD4015N: 1.5" Compression Driver, 4" Coil, 111 dB, 160 W AES
With the NSD4015N, 18Sound brings the nitride-coated NSD diaphragm into the 1.5" format: neodymium motor, 4" voice coil, 40 mm exit, 8 Ω. The specifications are 111 dB sensitivity, 160 W AES and a working range from 0.8 kHz to 20,000 Hz, at 57 mm mounting depth and 3.2 kg.
The 1.5" throat is an in-between format. It loads the diaphragm lower than a 1.4" throat and lets it work closer to the 2" region, yet keeps the exit smaller, so beaming in the top octave is less pronounced than with 2". The nitride layer on the titanium stiffens the diaphragm and shifts its resonances upward; that is the difference from the sibling ND4015Ti2 with a plain titanium diaphragm, which in return reaches slightly higher sensitivity.
Use and enclosure
The recommended crossover is 0.8 kHz. With 160 W AES and the 4" coil, the NSD4015N has the thermal reserves to work continuously at this limit in a two-way box with a large woofer, provided a steep filter (24 dB/octave) catches the excursion below the crossover. In three-way systems where a midrange covers the lower octave, the driver runs even cleaner with a correspondingly higher crossover.
For the horn, the 1.5" throat is decisive: a 1.4" or 2" horn will not fit without an adapter. You will find the 18Sound horns and waveguides at 42.audio in the Horns & Waveguides category; check the flange there before ordering. The PDF datasheet and the driver database entry give you frequency response and impedance curve for crossover simulation.
What to look out for
- 1.5" throat, 40 mm exit: horn with matching flange or adapter required.
- 160 W AES at 8 Ω, 111 dB sensitivity.
- Crossover from 0.8 kHz, filter at 24 dB/octave.
- 57 mm mounting depth, 3.2 kg, neodymium magnet.
- 4" voice coil under a nitride-coated titanium diaphragm.
Frequently asked questions
NSD4015N or ND4015Ti2: which should I choose?
Both share the 1.5" throat, 4" coil, 160 W AES, 8 Ω and 57 mm mounting depth. The NSD4015N has the nitride-coated diaphragm for a calmer top end at 111 dB; the ND4015Ti2 with plain titanium is slightly louder. For long sessions without listening fatigue, the NSD version is the one.
Which amplifier makes sense?
At 111 dB a small channel is enough. What matters is a limiter that prevents clipping, since distorted signals carry high-frequency energy that heats the coil. The 8 Ω load is easy for any power amp.
Can I cross the driver lower than 0.8 kHz?
Not advisable. The 0.8 kHz figure is both the lower limit of the response and the manufacturer's recommendation. Below it, diaphragm excursion rises, and with it distortion and the risk of failure.
