18Sound XD125: 1" Ferrite Compression Driver with 109 dB for Small Boxes
The 18Sound XD125 is the entry point into 18Sound's 1" compression drivers: ferrite magnet, 1" voice coil, polymer diaphragm, 8 Ω, 1.1 kg. It is intended for compact two-way boxes where a horn-loaded tweeter should deliver more SPL and better directivity than a dome, without the driver dictating the box's budget.
The data: 109 dB sensitivity, 25 W AES, working range from 2 kHz to 18,000 Hz, exit 25 mm. The polymer diaphragm is the opposite approach to titanium: it is more heavily damped, has less pronounced resonances and sounds softer at the top, but does not reach the 20 kHz extension that metal diaphragms offer. For speech, stage monitors and small music systems that is a sensible compromise.
Use and enclosure
The recommended crossover is 2.5 kHz, well above the 2 kHz lower limit. With 25 W AES the XD125 is clearly a driver for small boxes with an 8" or 10" woofer; its 109 dB sensitivity ensures it still keeps pace with the bass section. A filter at 12 or 24 dB/octave at 2.5 kHz and a limiter in active operation are mandatory, since the 1" coil has little thermal mass.
For a horn, the 1" models from 18Sound at 42.audio fit: XT120 for wide coverage in small rooms, XT1086 Alu, XR1064 Alu for tighter beaming and the XG10 Alu waveguide for shallow baffles.
