18Sound XO 8 CX 401F: passive crossover for the 8" ferrite coaxial 8CX401F
Small coaxial systems depend on cone and HF unit truly acting as one source, and for that the 8" coaxial 8CX401F needs a crossover that belongs to it. The XO 8 CX 401F is exactly that: a passive two-way network from 18Sound, tuned to the recommended 3.0 kHz crossover point, to the 95 dB sensitivity of the driver and to the level of its HF section with polyester diaphragm and 90° dispersion.
The 8CX401F differs from the larger NCX coaxials in several respects: ferrite instead of neodymium magnet, 2" voice coil instead of 3", 280 W AES and a usable range of 65 Hz to 6,100 Hz. The comparatively high crossover at 3.0 kHz is typical of small coaxials, whose cone carries the midrange cleanly quite far up and whose HF unit only takes over late. At 4.4 kg and 150 mm mounting depth the system stays manageable even with the ferrite motor.
Use and enclosure
The combination of 8CX401F and this crossover suits compact near-field and stage monitors, ceiling loudspeakers, small installation cabinets and delay speakers where one amplifier channel per box is wanted. The passive approach pays off in installations in particular: no DSP presets, no two channels per cabinet, no risk of mixed-up wiring. The 90° dispersion of the HF section covers a wide field, an advantage at short listening distances.
For the enclosure the figures are Fs 56 Hz, Qts 0.34, Vas 23.9 l and Xmax 5.8 mm. With only 23.9 l Vas the box stays small, the right value comes from the enclosure calculator at 42.audio. If you add a subwoofer, that relieves the 8" cone considerably, and the 280 W AES power handling is then plenty for solid levels in the mid and high range.
What to look out for
- Tuned for the 8CX401F only, the 3.0 kHz crossover point does not suit the NCX coaxials.
- 8 Ω, one amplifier channel per cabinet, base the power on 280 W AES.
- Ferrite magnet: 4.4 kg at 150 mm mounting depth, allow enough depth in the cabinet.
- Vas 23.9 l gives a compact enclosure, calculated with the enclosure tool at 42.audio.

Frequently asked questions
Can I run the 8CX401F without this crossover?
Only actively with two amplifier channels and a DSP that splits at 3.0 kHz and pads the HF level. You must not connect the coaxial directly to one channel without a crossover, the compression driver would receive low frequencies and be damaged.
What is an 8" coaxial with 95 dB good for?
Small monitors, delay lines, ceiling mounting and installations where compact dimensions matter more than maximum output. With 280 W AES and 95 dB it has enough reserve for those jobs, for full-range coverage of large areas the larger NCX coaxials would be the better choice.
Which amplifier fits?
One channel at 8 Ω with power around the driver's 280 W AES. In installations an amplifier with a limiter makes sense so the coaxial is not overloaded even when misused.
