Beyma 10MC700Nd: 10" neodymium midrange with 97 dB, 700 W AES and a 3" voice coil

The Beyma 10MC700Nd is a 10" midrange driver from the MC series with a neodymium motor, built for the mid band of multi-way PA systems and for line array modules where every kilogram matters. At 3.6 kg it is remarkably light for a 700 W AES driver with a 3" voice coil; the neodymium ring delivers a motor strength of 21.8 Tm that a ferrite magnet would only reach with several times the mass.

Among Beyma's 10" midrange units the 10MC700Nd stands for the pairing of high power handling with a tight alignment: Qts 0.22 at a resonance of 63 Hz and only 20 l Vas describe a heavily damped motor that keeps the cone under control and reproduces transients without ringing. The moving mass of 54 g is low for a 10" cone with 7 mm Xmax, which explains the usable range up to 4,000 Hz.

Use and enclosure

Its natural place is the midrange section of a 3-way system between an 18" bass driver and a compression driver. From the Thiele-Small parameters, a closed midrange compartment of 2.1 l with an in-box resonance of 202 Hz comes out as a guideline; the lower crossover then sits well above the 65 Hz limit, in practice around the box resonance or higher. Towards the top the driver can be taken close to 4,000 Hz, though handing over to the horn noticeably below that keeps the directivity of the 10" cone in step with the horn.

An EBP of 262 also tells you that this driver gives no deep bass in a closed box; a vented guideline of 3.9 l tuned to 103 Hz exists, but only makes sense if you really want to cover the region around 136 Hz. The 10MC700Nd is not meant for low bass. Fine tuning is done with the 42.audio enclosure calculator.

What to look out for

  • 8 Ω nominal, Re 5.2 Ω: easy load for any PA amplifier, two in parallel at 4 Ω still fine.
  • Mounting depth 126 mm, weight 3.6 kg: fits shallow midrange enclosures and line array modules.
  • Neodymium motor with BL 21.8 Tm and a 3" voice coil for 700 W AES continuous.
  • Xmax 7 mm and Vd 245 cm³: enough excursion for loud mids, no substitute for a woofer.
  • Le 1 mH: a passive crossover should account for the rising impedance towards the top.

Frequently asked questions

How does the 10MC700Nd differ from the 10MC500Nd?

Both are 10" neodymium midranges from the MC series, but the 10MC700Nd offers 700 W AES power handling and a tighter alignment with Qts 0.22 versus 0.24. The 10MC500Nd has a slightly more compliant suspension with 58 Hz resonance and 29 l Vas, which matters little in small volumes.

Which enclosure for midrange duty?

A closed, well damped compartment around 2.1 l as a guideline, giving an in-box resonance around 202 Hz. Cross over above that point and the cone stays under the control of the strong motor.

Is the sensitivity enough to match a horn tweeter?

97 dB is high for a 10" cone, but a compression driver on a horn usually sits above it. Plan for level matching in the HF path, either a passive L-pad or attenuation in the DSP.
