Beyma 10NMFS: 10" low-mid driver with 10 mm Xmax and 30 to 2,000 Hz
The Beyma 10NMFS is the odd one out in the midrange category: with a resonance of 35 Hz, 10 mm Xmax and a working range of 30 to 2,000 Hz it is really a low-mid driver that handles bass and midrange together in compact 2-way designs. The 90 dB sensitivity is the price of an extension no other 10" driver in this overview offers.
The suspension is soft with 45 l Vas and, at Qts 0.42, damped so that closed and vented alignments both work. The ferrite motor with 15.3 Tm moves a mass of 95 g via a 2.5" voice coil rated 350 W AES; the displacement volume of 880 cm³ is considerable for a 10" driver. At 6.5 kg and 172.8 mm mounting depth it needs more room than the pure midranges of the MC series.
Use and enclosure
The classic application is the low-mid section of a 2-way box with a compression driver or AMT above it, in compact nearfield monitors with ambition, or as the low-mid in a 3-way home loudspeaker. For a closed box the guideline is 25 l with an in-box resonance of 59 Hz, a good basis for tight bass that can be equalised by DSP. If you want more extension, take the vented guideline of 56 l tuned to 32 Hz, which reaches an f3 around 31 Hz, at the cost of a correspondingly large cabinet.
The upper limit of 2,000 Hz determines the choice of tweeter: a unit that works reliably to 2 kHz and below is a must, and the crossover should sit sensibly below 2,000 Hz. What to look out for
- 90 dB sensitivity: needs more amplifier power than the pure midranges in the range.
- Xmax 10 mm, Vd 880 cm³: real low end possible, not just midrange.
- Mounting depth 172.8 mm and 6.5 kg: plan for a deep cabinet.
- 8 Ω, Re 5.9 Ω, Le 1.3 mH: consider impedance compensation in passive crossovers.
- Range only to 2,000 Hz: the tweeter must be able to cross low.
Frequently asked questions
Is the 10NMFS really a midrange?
Beyma lists it as one, but technically it is a low-mid driver with 35 Hz resonance and 10 mm Xmax. Compared with the 10CMV2 at 52 Hz resonance and a similar Qts of 0.42, the 10NMFS goes considerably deeper and suits 2-way designs with genuine bass.
Which enclosure?
Closed 25 l as a guideline for a compact box with 59 Hz in-box resonance, or vented 56 l tuned to 32 Hz for full extension. Both variants align cleanly at Qts 0.42.
Which tweeter goes with it?
A compression driver on a small horn or an AMT that tolerates a crossover well below 2,000 Hz. The 90 dB of the 10NMFS can be paired with almost any horn tweeter using attenuation in the HF path.
