Beyma 12MCS500: 12" midrange with 98 dB, 500 W AES and 65 to 5,000 Hz
If you are after a 12" midrange with 98 dB and 500 W AES without paying for neodymium or a 3" voice coil, you end up at the Beyma 12MCS500 from the MCS series. The ferrite motor with 17.6 Tm drives a moving mass of 59 g, the working range covers 65 to 5,000 Hz, and with 8 mm Xmax the driver has more excursion than most midranges of this size.
Qts 0.36 at 57 Hz resonance and 57 l Vas describe an alignment that sits between a tight PA midrange and a universal low-mid driver. That allows both a small closed midrange compartment and a vented box for 2-way tops. The 2.5" voice coil handles 500 W AES, inductance is 1.1 mH. At 6 kg and 141 mm mounting depth the driver remains manageable.
Use and enclosure
As the midrange in a 3-way system the 12MCS500 works in a closed compartment with a guideline of 20 l and an in-box resonance of 112 Hz. Cross over at the bottom well above the 65 Hz limit, sensibly above the box resonance, and at the top somewhere below 5,000 Hz to the horn, for a 12" preferably in the lower part of the possible range.
The EBP of 150 and the 8 mm Xmax additionally make it a candidate for a 2-way top with kick: the vented guideline is 46 l tuned to 60 Hz with an f3 of 62 Hz. With 98 dB sensitivity an amplifier delivering considerably less than 500 W into 8 Ω is entirely adequate. More important is a high-pass so the 8 mm of excursion is not exhausted by signals below the tuning frequency.
