Beyma 12WR400: 12" woofer with 97 dB and a wide working range up to 5,000 Hz

A 12" driver that handles the whole bass and midrange in a 2-way top – that is what the Beyma 12WR400 from the WR series is built for. 400 W AES, 97 dB sensitivity, 8 Ω and a usable range from 45 to 5,000 Hz describe an all-rounder that is specialised neither in maximum excursion nor in pure midrange duty, but combines both in one frame.

The parameters back this up: Fs 42 Hz, Qts 0.27 and Vas 91 l give an EBP of 150, so a driver that wants to work in a vented enclosure. The moving mass of 63 g is low for a 12" and explains the efficiency as well as the extension at the top; the motor with BL 18 Tm and the 3" voice coil keep everything under control. An Xmax of 6.3 mm and 334 cm³ of displacement are adequate for a full-range top, not for a subwoofer.

Use and enclosure

As a guide value from the Thiele-Small parameters, a vented box of 32 l tuned to 57 Hz with a lower cut-off f3 of 68 Hz results. That is a volume which fits a handy 12" top, and the bass is enough for speech, live music and small dance floors without a subwoofer; for more extension you add a sub and high-pass the top. Sealed it would be 16 l at fc 110 Hz – usable as a satellite above a subwoofer, but not on its own. The fine-tuning is done with the enclosure calculator on 42.audio.

At the top the 12WR400 works up to 5,000 Hz, which gives you room when choosing the crossover to the tweeter: you can cross well below the upper limit and relieve the tweeter. Le of 1 mH is unremarkable for a 3" coil. A 1" compression driver with a horn from the Beyma range is the classic complement for a 2-way top.

What to look out for

  • 8 Ω nominal, Re 5.6 Ω – uncritical on any amplifier rated for 8 Ω.
  • 3" voice coil, 400 W AES: sufficient for a 2-way top, not a subwoofer rating.
  • Mounting depth 131 mm, 5.5 kg – fits shallow cabinets and monitor wedges.
  • Xmax 6.3 mm: a high-pass below the vent tuning protects against bottoming.
  • Vented guide value 32 l / 57 Hz – a compact volume for a 12" top.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use the 12WR400 as a stage monitor?

Yes, it is a good fit: the wide working range up to 5,000 Hz, 97 dB sensitivity and the shallow mounting depth of 131 mm are exactly the properties a 2-way wedge needs. A high-pass below the tuning is advisable for monitors with bass content in the mix.

Which power amplifier suits the 12WR400?

An amplifier delivering around the 400 W AES rating into 8 Ω. More power only adds distortion at 6.3 mm Xmax; less is no problem with 97 dB sensitivity.

How does it differ from the 18 Sound 12NLW9410?

The 12NLW9410 has the same Fs of 42 Hz and a similar Qts of 0.26, but a considerably smaller Vas of 55 l – its suspension is stiffer and it needs less box. The 12WR400 with 91 l Vas wants a little more volume and in return plays up to 5,000 Hz.

Beyma 12WR400: manufacturer, spellings and classification

Beyma and Acustica Beyma refer to the same manufacturer: Acústica Beyma S.L. of Moncada near Valencia, Spain. The 12WR400 is a 12-inch woofer from the WR series, available from 42.audio, Beyma dealer in Germany, with datasheet and full specifications in the driver database.

At 42.audio you get the BEYMA 12WR400 with all key data in the driver database and the enclosure calculator. More drivers from this manufacturer: Atlas Beyma.
