Beyma 15LEX1000Fe: 15" ferrite subwoofer with 1,000 W AES and 968 cm³ displacement

If you are looking for a 15" bass driver for compact vented subwoofers, you end up at the Beyma 15LEX1000Fe from the LEX series. The ferrite driver brings 1,000 W AES power handling, 97 dB sensitivity, a 3.5" voice coil and a working range from 40 to 1,000 Hz. The upper limit of 1,000 Hz makes the orientation clear: this is a bass and subwoofer driver, not a full-range woofer for tops.

The decisive figure is the stroke: 11 mm Xmax over 0.088 m² of cone area gives 968 cm³ of displacement – the raw material for deep-bass SPL. Add Fs 41 Hz, Qts 0.34, Vas 116 l and a motor with BL 23.2 Tm that controls the 142 g moving mass. The EBP of 111 places the driver in vented territory, where it converts its excursion reserve into SPL most effectively. Ferrite instead of neodymium means 11 kg of weight, but in return an attractively priced motor for fixed installation and ground stacks.

Use and enclosure

From the Thiele-Small parameters a vented box of 79 l results as a guide value, tuned to 45 Hz, with a lower cut-off of 48 Hz. That is a volume which still fits a portable 15" sub and yet reaches deep down – for live sound, club subs and home cinema projects with a large cabinet. Sealed it would be 35 l at fc 85 Hz; that suits a very compact bass with DSP equalisation, but wastes the excursion reserve. Cross the 15LEX1000Fe well below its upper limit of 1,000 Hz to the top or mid-bass system; Le of 1.7 mH already indicates that the driver is no longer at home above the bass range. A high-pass filter just below the tuning frequency is mandatory at 11 mm Xmax, otherwise the excursion below fb becomes uncontrolled.
