Beyma 15WR400: lightweight 15" woofer with 99 dB and 400 W AES for vented tops
At 6.1 kg and 99 dB sensitivity, the Beyma 15WR400 is a 15" woofer optimised for efficiency and low weight. It belongs to the WR series, uses a 3" voice coil and handles 400 W AES – a driver for vented tops and full-range cabinets where a 15" covers the bass and a large part of the midrange.
The stated range of 40 to 4000 Hz reaches unusually high for a 15". That is made possible by the low moving mass of 91 g and a voice coil inductance of only 1 mH; both keep the roll-off towards high frequencies shallow. With BL 19.2 Tm, Qts 0.3 and Vas 236 l, the motor sits in the classic territory for vented enclosures.
Use and enclosure
An EBP of 116 points clearly to vented or horn loading; sealed boxes leave little extension. The guideline is 112 l tuned to 45 Hz with an f3 around 51 Hz – a typical volume for a 15" two-way top. Sealed, you would start at 52 l with fc at 85 Hz, which only suits designs that hand the bass to a subwoofer. Xmax of 6.3 mm and a displacement volume of 555 cm³ limit deep-bass output: the 15WR400 is an efficiency driver, not an excursion driver.
In a two-way box with a horn tweeter, the upper limit of 4000 Hz lets you cross the 15WR400 relatively high, which takes load off the compression driver. Mounting depth of 162 mm is moderate. Which crossover frequency makes sense depends on the horn – the enclosure calculator and the driver database at 42.audio help you match them.
What to look out for
- 8 Ω nominal and Re 5.6 Ω: an uncritical load for any PA amplifier.
- Only 6.1 kg: saves weight in tops that get carried and flown.
- Xmax 6.3 mm: use a high-pass below the tuning frequency, otherwise bottoming is likely at 400 W.
- Mms 91 g and Le 1 mH: allows high crossover points, upper limit 4000 Hz.
- Mounting depth 162 mm, 3" voice coil.
Frequently asked questions
Is the 15WR400 suitable as a subwoofer?
Only to a limited extent. With Xmax 6.3 mm and EBP 116 it is built for vented tops working upwards from the tuning frequency around 45 Hz. For real subwoofer duty with high levels in the lowest bass, choose a driver with considerably more excursion.
What sets it apart from the 18 Sound 15W700?
Both are very close at Qts 0.3; the 15W700 has fs 38 Hz and Vas 217 l, the 15WR400 fs 36 Hz and Vas 236 l. In simulation both end up in similar vented volumes. The 15WR400 brings 99 dB and 6.1 kg to the table; where the parameters differ in detail is easy to see in the comparison view of the 42.audio driver database.
What amplifier do I need for the 15WR400?
400 W AES into 8 Ω is the continuous rating; with 99 dB sensitivity you reach high levels with moderate power. An amplifier in that range into 8 Ω is sufficient. More important is a high-pass filter that limits excursion below the tuning frequency.
