Beyma 15WRS400: 15" woofer with 98.5 dB, Qts 0.33 and 400 W AES for large vented boxes
The Beyma 15WRS400 is the sister model of the 15WR400 in the WRS series: same 15" frame, same 3" voice coil, 400 W AES, 8 Ω and a range of 40 to 4000 Hz. The differences are in the motor: BL 18.2 Tm, Qts 0.33 and a sensitivity of 98.5 dB.
The slightly higher Qts with identical moving mass of 91 g and Vas 236 l shifts the driver towards larger, lower-tuned enclosures. With fs 36 Hz, Xmax 6.3 mm and 6.25 kg it remains a lightweight efficiency driver that is at home in full-range cabinets and bass tops and plays cleanly well beyond the bass region into the midrange.
Use and enclosure
With EBP 103 the 15WRS400 sits on the border between the two enclosure types, leaning towards vented. The guideline from the Thiele-Small parameters: 147 l vented, tuned to 41 Hz, with an f3 around 44 Hz. That is noticeably more volume than the 15WR400 needs and returns more extension for a driver of this class. Sealed, 66 l with fc at 77 Hz is the starting point – workable when a subwoofer takes over below. Because of the moderate 6.3 mm excursion, a high-pass belongs just below the tuning frequency.
As a bass-mid driver in two-way designs with horn and compression driver, the 15WRS400 can be crossed comparatively high thanks to Le 1.1 mH and Mms 91 g; the upper limit is 4000 Hz. Mounting depth is 163 mm. How the box behaves with a different volume is easy to check in the enclosure calculator at 42.audio.
What to look out for
- 8 Ω nominal, Re 5.6 Ω: a benign load that any PA power amp handles.
- 6.25 kg total weight: a light 15" driver for portable cabinets.
- Xmax 6.3 mm and Vd 555 cm³: a high-pass below the tuning frequency is mandatory.
- Qts 0.33, Vas 236 l: vented guideline 147 l – plan the cabinet accordingly.
- Mounting depth 163 mm with a 3" voice coil.
Frequently asked questions
15WRS400 or 15WR400 – which one is right for me?
The 15WR400 has slightly more efficiency and a lower Qts; the 15WRS400 with Qts 0.33 and 98.5 dB behaves more forgivingly in larger boxes and delivers more extension there. If you have the volume, the 15WRS400 is the more relaxed choice; if the box must stay compact, lean towards the 15WR400.
How does it compare with the Beyma 15LEX1600Fe?
Both have Qts 0.33, but the 15LEX1600Fe has a much stiffer suspension with Vas 106 l and fs 38 Hz and is designed for small, high-power enclosures. The 15WRS400 with Vas 236 l wants the larger volume and offers 98.5 dB sensitivity at 400 W AES in return. You will find both in the 42.audio shop.
Can I run it as a full-range bass without a subwoofer?
Yes, in the 147 l vented guideline with an f3 around 44 Hz it covers music without extreme deep bass well. At high levels below tuning, the high-pass keeps the 6.3 mm Xmax from being exceeded. For sustained high deep-bass levels a separate subwoofer is the better solution.
