Beyma 18LEX1200Fe: 18" woofer with 4" voice coil, fs 32 Hz and 1200 W AES
The Beyma 18LEX1200Fe is an 18" subwoofer driver from the LEX series with a ferrite motor, 4" voice coil and 1200 W AES power handling. Sensitivity is 97 dB at 8 Ω, the usable range 40 to 1000 Hz. At 14 kg it is one of the heavier members of the series – the flip side of a large ferrite magnet and the thermal mass of a 4" coil.
With fs 32 Hz it has the lowest resonance among the ferrite models of the LEX series; Vas 277 l and Qts 0.38 describe a soft, generously dimensioned suspension. The high Qms of 12.2 points to a mechanically low-loss construction. 200 g of moving mass, BL 23.2 Tm and 11 mm Xmax add up to a driver that plays deep and controlled in large vented enclosures.
Use and enclosure
EBP 82: vented and sealed are both conceivable, with vented realising the driver's potential. Guideline: 259 l tuned to 32 Hz, f3 also at 32 Hz. That is an enclosure for subwoofer duty where extension into the lowest bass region counts – live stage, cinema, club. Sealed, 113 l with fc at 60 Hz is the Butterworth starting point, but with noticeably less deep bass.
Mind the mounting depth of 225 mm. With a subwoofer crossover far below 1000 Hz, the inductance of 1.21 mH plays no role. At 1200 W the suspension needs a high-pass below the tuning frequency so the 11 mm Xmax is not exceeded at frequencies without box loading. What to look out for
- 8 Ω, Re 5.3 Ω: a standard load for PA amplifiers.
- 14 kg ferrite driver: baffle and mounting hardware must carry the weight permanently.

18LEX1200Fe or 18LEX1600Fe?
The 18LEX1600Fe has a stiffer suspension with Vas 188 l and fs 34 Hz and runs in smaller boxes; the 18LEX1200Fe with Vas 277 l and fs 32 Hz needs more volume and reaches deeper in return. Both have Qts 0.38. If space is available, the 1200 delivers the more relaxed deep bass; if the cabinet must be compact, the 1600.
How does it differ from the Beyma 18PWB1000Fe/S?
The 18PWB1000Fe/S has fs 27 Hz and Vas 317 l at the same Qts of 0.38, so it is suspended even more softly and needs an even larger box. The 18LEX1200Fe with 1200 W AES and a 4" voice coil is the higher-power variant with somewhat lower volume demand. 42.audio carries both in the shop.
Which amplifier makes sense for the 18LEX1200Fe?
1200 W AES into 8 Ω. An amplifier that delivers this continuously into 8 Ω is a fit; with 97 dB sensitivity you get far with less as well. Use a limiter and a high-pass and coil and suspension stay in the safe range.
