Beyma 18LX60V2/S: 18" woofer with Qts 0.48 for large vented and sealed enclosures

Not every 18" is a high-power sub. The Beyma 18LX60V2/S from the LX series is an 18" woofer with 700 W AES, 98 dB sensitivity and, for a PA driver, an unusually high Qts of 0.48. It covers 25 to 1000 Hz at 8 Ω and works with a 4" voice coil.

The high Qts together with Qms 13.8, fs 35 Hz and Vas 236 l describes a mechanically low-loss driver with comparatively gentle electrical damping; BL 19 Tm drives 178 g of moving mass. Drivers like this need large volumes but reward you with an even, deep-reaching response without a tight alignment – a profile that recalls classic large cabinets for cinema, bass guitar and home subwoofers rather than compact touring subs. Xmax is 8.5 mm, displacement volume 1,130 cm³.

Use and enclosure

EBP 73 allows both enclosure types. The vented guideline makes full use of the 25 Hz lower limit: 431 l tuned to 28 Hz with an f3 around 25 Hz. That is a very large cabinet, feasible in fixed installations or a home cinema with room to spare. Sealed, 202 l with fc at 52 Hz results; with Qts 0.48 the curve is well behaved, which is enough for music without extreme sub-bass and simplifies cabinet building considerably. Mounting depth is 218 mm, weight 11.2 kg.

The Beyma 18WRS600 with fs 30 Hz, Qts 0.47 and Vas 354 l is similarly soft and needs even more volume; the FaitalPRO 18FH500 with Qts 0.53 and Vas 450.1 l goes the same way. Because of the moderate 8.5 mm Xmax, set a high-pass below tuning in a vented box. As a subwoofer, cross it far below 1000 Hz; the inductance of 1.3 mH is uncritical there. Frequently asked questions

Is the 18LX60V2/S suitable for home cinema?

Yes, that is exactly where it plays to its strength: a sealed box around 202 l with fc at 52 Hz is straightforward to build and can be equalised downwards with the AV receiver or a DSP. With 98 dB sensitivity and 700 W AES there is enough reserve for cinema levels. For maximum extension without equalisation, the 431 l vented guideline is the alternative.

18LX60V2/S or Beyma 18WRS600?

Both are softly suspended: Qts 0.48 versus 0.47. The 18WRS600 with fs 30 Hz and Vas 354 l needs even more volume, the 18LX60V2/S with Vas 236 l and a 4" voice coil stays somewhat more compact and brings 700 W AES. 42.audio carries both in the shop.

Which power amplifier suits the 18LX60V2/S?

700 W AES into 8 Ω is the continuous rating. Together with 98 dB sensitivity, an amplifier in that range into 8 Ω is perfectly sufficient; a high-pass below the tuning frequency protects the 8.5 mm Xmax.
