Beyma 18WRS600: lightweight 18" woofer with 97 dB and Qts 0.47 for large vented boxes

At 8.7 kg the Beyma 18WRS600 is an unusually light 18" woofer. The WRS series relies on a 3" voice coil rated at 600 W AES, 97 dB sensitivity and a parameter set clearly different from heavily driven subwoofer chassis: Qts 0.47, Vas 354 l and Fs 30 Hz with a moving mass of only 178 g.

The high total Q results from a moderate motor with BL 19 Tm, while the mechanical Q of 13.8 points to a very low-loss suspension. That is the profile of a classic bass driver for large volumes, the kind found in full-range PA cabinets, vented boxes for live music or open-baffle designs. Xmax is 8.5 mm and the displacement volume 1130 cm³, enough for the low-frequency section of a 2-way or 3-way system without claiming to be a dedicated subwoofer.

Use and enclosure

The Thiele-Small guidelines come out large: vented around 608 l tuned to 25 Hz with f3 near 22 Hz, sealed about 280 l with fc at 45 Hz. The EBP of 62 permits both alignments. Realistically you will choose a smaller reflex volume and tune higher, which raises the lower cut-off but yields a cabinet you can actually transport. The transmission range of 35 Hz to 1000 Hz allows a crossover to a midrange or horn in the lower midband, well below the 1000 Hz limit. The low inductance of 1.3 mH helps here because the impedance rise through the crossover region stays shallow. For 600 W AES into 8 Ω a mid-power amplifier is sufficient.

What to look out for

  • Only 8.7 kg: ideal when a large 18" cabinet still has to be carried.
  • Qts 0.47 demands a large volume; small reflex boxes give no extension here.
  • Xmax 8.5 mm: less excursion than dedicated sub drivers, plan a high-pass below the tuning frequency.
  • Mounting depth 218 mm, Re 5.2 Ω at 8 Ω nominal impedance.
  • Le 1.3 mH: shallow impedance curve, friendly to passive crossovers.

Both have a similarly high total Q, 0.47 versus 0.48. The 18LX60V2/S is tighter with Fs 35 Hz and Vas 236 l and gets by with a smaller box, whereas the 18WRS600 reaches lower with Fs 30 Hz and Vas 354 l and wants more volume.

Is the 18WRS600 a subwoofer driver?

It is more of a bass driver for full-range cabinets. With 8.5 mm Xmax and 600 W AES it sits below the excursion reserves of typical subwoofer drivers, but it brings 97 dB sensitivity and a range up to 1000 Hz that pairs well with a midrange or horn.

Which amplifier fits?

An amplifier delivering around 600 W into 8 Ω uses the power handling. Since the 3" voice coil has less thermal reserve than 4" coils, a properly set limiter matters more than surplus power.
