Beyma 5MP60/N: 5" driver with 88 dB and a range up to 12,000 Hz for compact cabinets
The Beyma 5MP60/N from the MP series is a 5" driver with a 1" voice coil, 50 W AES power handling and a transmission range of 65 Hz to 12,000 Hz. The wide band sets it apart from pure woofers: it is intended as a small mid-woofer that works in compact cabinets, column speakers or small sound reinforcement without a separate midrange, and becomes a 2-way system with the addition of a tweeter.
The parameters are laid out for small enclosures: Fs 63 Hz, Qts 0.46, Vas 5.8 l with a moving mass of only 11 g. The motor with BL 6.4 Tm is moderate, yet the 88 dB sensitivity at 8 Ω is respectable for a 5" driver of this size. Xmax is 5.5 mm, giving 46 cm³ of displacement, and at 1.2 kg the weight hardly matters when several drivers sit in one column.
Use and enclosure
The EBP of 109 points to vented loading, and the guideline is about 9.4 l with fb 53 Hz and f3 around 49 Hz. That extracts surprising extension from a 5" driver, but requires a box that is fairly large for the size. Sealed, the guideline is 4.3 l with fc around 97 Hz, the more practical solution for satellites with a separate subwoofer. Check both with the enclosure calculator at 42.audio.
At the top the driver reaches 12,000 Hz, so the crossover to the tweeter can sit quite high if the directivity of the 5" cone allows it. The low inductance of 0.2 mH keeps the impedance curve flat, which simplifies passive crossovers. With 50 W AES a small amplifier is enough; more important is a high-pass that protects the 5.5 mm Xmax from deep bass a 5" driver is not supposed to deliver anyway.
What to look out for
- 50 W AES: modest amplifier power is sufficient, avoid overdriving with deep bass.
- Qms 2.3: strongly damped suspension, benign behaviour around resonance.
- Le 0.2 mH: flat impedance curve, simple passive crossover.
- Xmax 5.5 mm with 11 g moving mass: plan a high-pass in satellite use.
- 1.2 kg: light enough for multiple-driver arrangements in columns or line arrays.
Frequently asked questions
What separates the 5MP60/N from the Beyma 5P200Fe?
The 5P200Fe with its 1.5" voice coil is the louder and more robust driver, but with Fs 72 Hz and Qts 0.33 it offers less extension in a small box. The 5MP60/N sits lower with Fs 63 Hz and Qts 0.46 and reaches 12,000 Hz, but is limited to 50 W.
Can I run the 5MP60/N full-range without a tweeter?
The range up to 12,000 Hz allows that in principle, for example in columns or speech reinforcement. For music playback with clean off-axis behaviour a tweeter is the better solution, since a 5" cone beams strongly at the top of its range.
Which enclosure suits a small monitor?
Sealed at about 4.3 l with fc around 97 Hz gives a compact satellite that works well with a subwoofer. If you want to do without a subwoofer, vented at around 9.4 l with fb 53 Hz is the variant with more extension.
