Beyma 8CFX260Nd: 8" coaxial midrange with 2.85" voice coil, 97 dB and neodymium

The Beyma 8CFX260Nd is no ordinary 8" coaxial. With a 2.85" voice coil, Fs 100 Hz and a response starting at 100 Hz it is designed as a coaxial midrange: a driver for the region where most systems have their crossover troubles, combined with a central HF unit that continues up to 20,000 Hz. The CFX series at Beyma stands for exactly this combination of a large coil and a midrange-oriented design.

The figures line up: 97 dB sensitivity at 8 Ω, 250 W AES, BL 13.5 Tm against only 21 g of moving mass, and Qts 0.35. The neodymium motor keeps the weight at 4.9 kg, remarkable for a coil of this size. Vas 8 l and Xmax 6 mm indicate a stiff, controlled system that works at high midrange levels without relying on large excursions.

Use and enclosure

With an EBP of 270 and a resonance at 100 Hz the case is clear: the 8CFX260Nd belongs in a sealed midrange chamber. As a guideline, around 2.6 l is enough, giving a corner frequency of 202 Hz; place the crossover to the woofer well above the resonance. Bass reflex is possible on paper with about 5.9 l tuned to 108 Hz and a lower limit around 113 Hz, but the benefit over the sealed chamber is small. The enclosure calculator on 42.audio gives the detailed design.

That makes the driver the mid-high unit for three-way PA systems with one or two large woofers, for main studio monitors with high dynamic demands, and for horn systems where a coaxial handles the mid-high range as a point source. The crossover between cone and HF unit is your own design; the parameters are in the driver database.

What to look out for

  • 2.85" voice coil at 250 W AES: very high thermal power handling in midrange duty.
  • Fs 100 Hz, EBP 270: a pure midrange, sealed chamber of around 2.6 l.
  • 97 dB at 8 Ω: matches efficient woofers and compression drivers in PA systems.
  • 4.9 kg despite the large coil: neodymium keeps the weight in check.
  • Re 5.2 Ω, Le 0.23 mH: low inductance, benign for the crossover.

Frequently asked questions

What distinguishes the 8CFX260Nd from the 18 Sound 8CX401F?

The 8CX401F has a much lower resonance at Fs 56 Hz and Vas 23.9 l and suits use as a compact full-range coaxial. The 8CFX260Nd, with Fs 100 Hz and the large 2.85" voice coil, is consistently designed for midrange and power handling; both share a similar Qts around 0.35.

Can I run it without a subwoofer?

Not sensibly. The response starts at 100 Hz, and even in a vented box the cutoff is around 113 Hz. The driver needs a woofer below it; then it plays to its strengths as a mid-high unit.

Which amplifier power fits?

With 97 dB you reach high levels even with moderate power amps; the 250 W AES rating is the ceiling. A high-pass that keeps frequencies below the working range away from the cone is essential, and then the full power handling is usable.
