Beyma 8CMV2: 8" midrange with 94 dB, 250 W AES and 80 to 8,000 Hz

The Beyma 8CMV2 from the CMV series is an 8" midrange driver that offers plenty of bandwidth in a compact format with 250 W AES, 94 dB sensitivity and a range of 80 to 8,000 Hz. The 1.5" voice coil, the 92 mm mounting depth and the 2.4 kg weight make it a driver for columns, monitors and small midrange chambers.

With Fs 75 Hz, Qts 0.52 and Vas 14.6 l the EBP is 136. The cone weighs 21 g on 220 cm² of area, the motor delivers a BL of 9.6 Tm and a Qes of 0.55; the high Qms of 7.7 indicates a low-loss suspension. The Xmax of 5.7 mm gives a Vd of 125 cm³, enough reserve to reproduce the region around 100 Hz cleanly.

Use and enclosure

The 8CMV2 works best in a sealed midrange chamber: about 17 l gives a guide value fc of 102 Hz, and the crossover to the bass goes well above the lower limit of 80 Hz. In a 3-way box with a 15" bass driver it thus covers the whole range from the upper lower-mids to the hand-over to the tweeter. For the exact design use the enclosure calculator at 42.audio.

At the top the range reaches 8,000 Hz, so the crossover to the tweeter is flexible. Compared with the Beyma 8MI100 (Fs 90 Hz, Qts 0.45, Vas 12 l) the 8CMV2 is tuned slightly softer and can be crossed lower thanks to Fs 75 Hz; the Qts of 0.52 favours sealed volumes, where the driver's Q tolerates the enclosure influence well.

Frequently asked questions

How do the 8CMV2 and the 8MI100 differ?

With Fs 90 Hz and Qts 0.45 the 8MI100 has the tighter alignment and a smaller Vas of 12 l. The 8CMV2 reaches slightly lower with Fs 75 Hz, has more self-damping with Qts 0.52 and, with 5.7 mm Xmax, suits applications where the midrange also carries the upper lower-mids.

Can I use the 8CMV2 as a full-range driver in a small box?

The range of 80 to 8,000 Hz allows that for speech and background sound. For music with demands on treble and bass a tweeter and a subwoofer make sense; 220 cm² of cone area beams noticeably above a few kilohertz.

Which amplifier fits?

At 94 dB into 8 Ω the 8CMV2 delivers high levels from just a few watts. The 250 W AES sets the frame for PA use; a high-pass above 80 Hz keeps the cone in its linear range.
