Beyma 8CX300Fe: 8" coaxial driver with 300 W AES, 95 dB and Qts 0.55 for sealed boxes
Not every coaxial wants a vented box. With Qts 0.55 the Beyma 8CX300Fe has a comparatively soft alignment, which makes it a candidate for sealed enclosures where it plays cleanly and with good transient behaviour without a port. The 8" driver from the CX series combines a cone with a 1.75" voice coil and ferrite magnet with a central HF unit; the response runs from 90 to 20,000 Hz.
With 300 W AES at 8 Ω the 8CX300Fe is the highest-rated 8" model of the series, and 95 dB sensitivity is a good figure for a ferrite system of this size. The rest of the design: Fs 89 Hz, Vas 10.8 l, BL 9.6 Tm against 20 g of moving mass and 6 mm Xmax. The 4.6 kg weight comes from the ferrite magnet, which in return is thermally sluggish and is no disadvantage at all in installations.
Use and enclosure
The Qts of 0.55 dictates the enclosure type: sealed. As a guideline for a Butterworth alignment the parameters give around 17 l with a corner frequency of 114 Hz. That is considerably more volume than the tighter neodymium coaxials need, but you need no port and get a flat, benign impedance curve. For use as a mid-high unit in a three-way system you can make the chamber smaller; the corner frequency then rises, which is unproblematic with a crossover to the woofer well above 90 Hz. The enclosure calculator on 42.audio shows you the relationship.
Sensible applications: installation speakers with subwoofer, sealed studio monitors, home cinema centres and surrounds, and three-way designs where the coaxial handles the range above a woofer as a point source. The crossover between cone and HF unit is set by your network; the Thiele-Small parameters are in the driver database.
What to look out for
- Qts 0.55: favour a sealed enclosure, guideline 17 l.
- 300 W AES at 8 Ω: high thermal power handling for an 8" driver.
- 95 dB sensitivity: good efficiency, moderate amplifiers are enough.
- 4.6 kg with ferrite: no concern for installations and stationary boxes.
- Re 5.2 Ω, Le 0.2 mH: very low inductance, simple crossover.
Frequently asked questions
How does the 8CX300Fe differ from the BMS 8C250?
Both have a similarly high Qts; the 8C250 sits at 0.52 with Fs 79.1 Hz and Vas 10.2 l. The 8CX300Fe has a slightly higher resonance at Fs 89 Hz but brings 300 W AES power handling, which equips it well for loud installations.
Is bass reflex an option?
With Qts 0.55 bass reflex gains little, because the alignment is too soft for a port; you risk a hump in the upper bass. Sealed with about 17 l is the clean way, and for deep bass you add a subwoofer anyway.
Which amplifier makes sense?
An amplifier in the range of the 300 W AES into 8 Ω exploits the driver, but with 95 dB you reach high levels with far less. A high-pass below the operating range keeps excursion and distortion low.
