Beyma 8CX300Nd/N: 8" neodymium coaxial with 96 dB, 250 W AES and extension from 60 Hz
Among the 8" coaxials, the Beyma 8CX300Nd/N is the one with the widest range of use. Its response starts at 60 Hz, the resonance is at 61 Hz, and with Vas 23 l and Qts 0.29 you can build a compact vented full-range speaker that carries speech and music without a subwoofer. The HF unit at the centre extends to 20,000 Hz, and the cone works with a 1.75" voice coil.
The neodymium motor with BL 12 Tm moves only 20 g of mass, which yields 96 dB sensitivity at 8 Ω and a very high Qms of 13: little mechanical loss, with damping coming almost entirely from the motor. 250 W AES power handling, Xmax 6 mm and a weight of 2.8 kg complete a driver made for portable two-way boxes and compact monitors.
Use and enclosure
The EBP of 203 points to bass reflex, and the guidelines are practical: around 9.9 l tuned to 78 Hz, with a lower cutoff around 90 Hz. That is a small enclosure for an 8" coaxial with complete reproduction above the bass region; add a subwoofer and it becomes a full system. As a midrange in a three-way design it works in a sealed midrange chamber of about 4.7 l with a corner frequency of 149 Hz. Port length and fine tuning are calculated with the enclosure calculator on 42.audio.
Typical applications: compact PA tops and stage monitors, nearfield and midfield studio monitors, high-efficiency home cinema speakers, and mid-high units in larger systems. The crossover between cone and HF unit is your own design; the Thiele-Small parameters are in the driver database.
What to look out for
- 2.8 kg: neodymium makes the 8" coaxial light enough for portable boxes.
- 96 dB at 8 Ω, 250 W AES: high SPL with moderate amplifier power.
- Qts 0.29, EBP 203: bass reflex with around 9.9 l as a guideline.
- Re 5.4 Ω, Le 0.3 mH: allow for the inductance in the crossover.
- Xmax 6 mm with Sd 220 cm²: enough for a top, plan a subwoofer for deep bass.
Frequently asked questions
How does the 8CX300Nd/N differ from the FaitalPRO 8HX230?
The 8HX230 has a higher resonance at Fs 70 Hz and a smaller equivalent volume of 14.7 l at practically the same Qts of 0.29. The 8CX300Nd/N reaches lower with its 61 Hz resonance and allows a lower vented tuning, needing slightly more volume in return.
Is the coaxial enough as a full-range box without a subwoofer?
For speech, conference and many music applications, yes: in the guideline enclosure the lower limit is around 90 Hz, and with the response starting at 60 Hz there is still usable output below. For bass-heavy music you add a subwoofer.
Which amplifier?
With 96 dB at 8 Ω even a small power amp gives decent levels; up to 250 W AES there is reserve. More important than power is a high-pass below the tuning frequency to protect the cone from over-excursion in the vented box.
