Beyma 8MI100: 8" midrange with 96 dB, 19 g moving mass and 100–7,000 Hz bandwidth

If you need an 8" midrange for a 3-way system that pairs 96 dB sensitivity with a very light cone, the Beyma 8MI100 from the MI series is an obvious candidate. It is designed as a pure midrange: usable range of 100 to 7,000 Hz, 250 W AES power handling through a 2" voice coil and a very light cone with only 19 g of moving mass.

That low mass is the core of the concept. An 8" cone with 19 g Mms and BL of 11.5 Tm responds fast and runs cleanly well beyond the usual handover point to a horn. The trade-off is a weak bass motor: Fs 90 Hz and Vas 12 l point to a stiff suspension, and Xmax 3 mm limits travel. The driver wants to be relieved by a woofer and then work in its core band. At 3.1 kg and 94 mm mounting depth it is compact enough for narrow midrange chambers.

Use and enclosure

In a 3-way top the 8MI100 belongs in a sealed midrange chamber. The guide value for a Butterworth alignment is 8.2 l with an in-box resonance of 141 Hz; place the crossover to the bass well above that so the 3 mm of Xmax never becomes the limit. Building the chamber smaller raises the resonance, which is no drawback with a high crossover point. For the top end a compression driver on a horn from the Beyma range is the natural partner, and the response up to 7,000 Hz gives you a wide window for that.

A vented guide value of 18 l with fb 78 Hz and f3 72 Hz exists on paper, but with Qts 0.45 and EBP 188 it is not a recommended path: the excursion is simply not there for bass. A close relative in the parameters is the Beyma 8CMV2 with Fs 75 Hz, Qts 0.52 and Vas 14.6 l, which reaches slightly lower and is also available at 42.audio.

What to look out for

  • 8 Ω, Re 6 Ω: suits any amplifier channel, also in parallel operation.
  • Xmax only 3 mm: high-pass is mandatory, cross well above 100 Hz.
  • Le 0.2 mH: very low inductance, hardly any impedance rise in the midrange.
  • Weight 3.1 kg, mounting depth 94 mm: easy to fit in a midrange chamber.
  • 250 W AES via 2" coil: adequate for tops, not a high-power driver.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use the 8MI100 in a 2-way box that also has to produce bass?

Only with compromises. Fs 90 Hz, Xmax 3 mm and an EBP of 188 clearly argue against bass duty. In a 3-way concept with a separate woofer the driver plays to its strength in the midrange.

How does the 8MI100 differ from the Beyma 8CMV2?

The 8CMV2 has a slightly softer motor with Fs 75 Hz and Qts 0.52, plus Vas 14.6 l, so it goes a bit lower in a sealed box. The 8MI100 is lighter at 19 g Mms and made for higher crossover points up to 7,000 Hz.

What amplifier is enough for the 8MI100?

With 96 dB sensitivity you need little power; a channel well below 250 W into 8 Ω already produces high levels. A clean high-pass and a limiter matter more, so the 2" coil is never thermally overloaded.

Beyma 8MI100: manufacturer, spellings and classification

Beyma and Acustica Beyma refer to the same manufacturer: Acústica Beyma S.L. of Moncada near Valencia, Spain. The 8MI100 is a 8-inch midrange driver from the MI series, available from 42.audio, Beyma dealer in Germany, with datasheet and full specifications in the driver database.

At 42.audio you get the BEYMA 8MI100 with all key data in the driver database and the enclosure calculator. More drivers from this manufacturer: Atlas Beyma.
