Beyma 8NMFW: 8" mid-woofer with Fs 37 Hz, 9 mm Xmax and 200 W AES
The Beyma 8NMFW does not fit the usual PA midrange mould. With a resonance frequency of 37 Hz, Vas of 27 l and 9 mm of linear excursion it is an 8" driver capable of real low end while still running cleanly up to 2,500 Hz. Beyma lists it in the NMFW series as a midrange; in practice it is a mid-woofer for compact 2-way designs and for studio or hi-fi speakers that are meant to work without a subwoofer.
The 90 dB sensitivity is low for a PA driver and high for an 8" hi-fi mid-woofer. That reflects a deliberate compromise: 48 g of moving mass and a soft suspension deliver depth, while the motor with BL of 13.4 Tm and Qts 0.34 keeps everything under control. The 2" voice coil handles 200 W AES and the displacement volume of 204 cm³ is remarkable for an 8" cone. With 137 mm mounting depth and 3.7 kg you need to allow some room in the cabinet.
Use and enclosure
As a mid-woofer in a 2-way speaker a vented box is the natural route: the guide value is 18 l tuned to fb 41 Hz with f3 44 Hz. That gets you a lower cut-off from a compact cabinet that many 8" drivers only reach with far more volume. The EBP of 103 sits right on the border between sealed and vented, so a sealed box works too: guide value 8.1 l at fc 77 Hz when you use the driver as a midrange in a closed chamber above a subwoofer.
The upper limit of 2,500 Hz is an honest figure and suits a tweeter that can be crossed low, for example a 1" compression driver on a waveguide from the Beyma range or a robust dome. Le of 1.1 mH produces an impedance rise around the crossover region that you should compensate in the network. The enclosure calculator at 42.audio gives you the exact alignment from Fs 37 Hz, Qts 0.34 and Vas 27 l.
What to look out for
- Xmax 9 mm and Vd 204 cm³: enough travel for bass duty without a subwoofer.
- 90 dB sensitivity: needs more amplifier power than typical PA midranges.
- Mounting depth 137 mm: a deep driver, plan the cabinet accordingly.
- 8 Ω, Re 5.7 Ω: easy load for studio and hi-fi amplifiers.
- Upper limit 2,500 Hz: the tweeter has to be crossable low.
Frequently asked questions
Is the 8NMFW a midrange or a woofer?
Both, depending on how you mount it. Fs 37 Hz and 9 mm Xmax make it a fully capable mid-woofer for 2-way speakers. In a sealed chamber of around 8.1 l it also works as a midrange above a subwoofer.
Which enclosure suits the 8NMFW?
As a guide value, a vented box of 18 l tuned to 41 Hz, giving an f3 around 44 Hz. For the exact design use the enclosure calculator at 42.audio with the parameters from the driver database.
How much amplifier power does the 8NMFW need?
At 90 dB it is less sensitive than classic PA drivers, but the 2" coil handles 200 W AES. An amplifier around the rated power into 8 Ω makes proper use of the 9 mm of excursion.
