Beyma CD-2514Nd/Ti: 1.4" titanium driver with neodymium motor, 80 W AES, 1.8 kg
The Beyma CD-2514Nd/Ti combines two properties that mobile PA builders look for: a titanium diaphragm that shrugs off high levels and rough handling, and a neodymium motor that keeps the weight down to 1.8 kg. The 2.5" voice coil is driven by a motor with a BL of 8.5 Tm, power handling is 80 W AES at 8 Ω, the working range runs from 600 Hz to 20,000 Hz and the exit measures 1.4".
Within the CD series it is the titanium model of the Nd-2514 family; if you want the same driver with a different diaphragm, the CD-2514Nd/PK or /PT are the options, and if you prefer a ferrite motor, the considerably heavier CD-2514Fe/Ti. At 54.7 mm mounting depth, the Nd/Ti is also shallower than its ferrite counterpart. 42.audio carries the whole family; a look at the driver database shows the differences at a glance.
Use and enclosure
Compact touring tops with a 12" woofer, wedge monitors and mobile two-way systems are the territory of the CD-2514Nd/Ti. It belongs on a 1.4" horn whose coverage you choose according to room and throw: Beyma offers its own 1.4" horns and waveguides, and alternatively the 18SOUND XT1464, XR1464C, XR1496C, PR614 or the H860 3D Print fit.
Cross well above 600 Hz with a steep slope. The titanium diaphragm tolerates high levels but not signal below the working range, so the high-pass matters more than amplifier power. If the presence emphasis typical of titanium bothers you, a dip in the DSP takes care of it. For combinations of several tops, the 8 Ω impedance is handy, because two drivers in parallel still present an amplifier-friendly 4 Ω.
What to look out for
- Titanium diaphragm on a 2.5" voice coil: level-proof, intended for loud live use.
- Neodymium motor, 1.8 kg: about half the weight of the ferrite version.
- BL 8.5 Tm: stronger motor than the ferrite model.
- 54.7 mm mounting depth: shallow enough for wedges and slim tops.
- 80 W AES at 8 Ω: high-pass well above 600 Hz, limiter recommended.
Frequently asked questions
Is the CD-2514Nd/Ti the right choice for a touring top?
Yes, that is exactly what the combination of titanium diaphragm, 1.8 kg and 54.7 mm mounting depth is for. It works on a 1.4" horn with a crossover well above 600 Hz. With DSP, a steep high-pass and a limiter it is well suited to hard touring duty.
What is the difference between the CD-2514Nd/Ti and the CD-2514Fe/Ti?
The magnet. The Nd/Ti weighs 1.8 kg, is 54.7 mm deep and has a BL of 8.5 Tm; the Fe/Ti is about twice as heavy, deeper and has a somewhat weaker motor. Power handling, impedance, voice coil and frequency range are identical.
Why does titanium sound different from the PK and PT diaphragms?
Titanium is stiffer and less self-damping, so the treble comes across as more present and the diaphragm copes especially well with high levels. The PK and PT variants of the same family aim for a softer character with identical electrical data. In the end, a listening comparison and the crossover voicing decide.
