Beyma CP-21/F: compression tweeter with 1.5" coil and 140 W AES for high levels
140 W AES is a statement for a tweeter with integrated horn. The Beyma CP-21/F achieves it with a 1.5" voice coil that offers more winding area for heat dissipation than the 1" types in the CP series, and a motor with a force factor of 5.2 Tm. The 1.7 kg weight shows that a larger magnet system is at work here.
The frequency range is 3,500 to 20,000 Hz, the impedance 8 Ω, the mounting depth 72 mm. This makes the CP-21/F the tweeter for PA boxes designed for sustained level: stage tops with a large mid-woofer, monitors for loud stages, club sound. The horn is part of the driver; there is no separate horn throat.
Use and enclosure
The lower limit at 3,500 Hz is higher than on the smaller models in the series; that is the price for the heavy coil and the high power handling. So cross over clearly above it with a passive 12 dB crossover, and closer to 3,500 Hz with 24 dB/oct. active. The mid-woofer must still run cleanly in this region, or you insert a mid-range driver and build three ways.
Because 140 W AES is far beyond what a tweeter in a two-way box normally sees, the thermal headroom is large. Electrically it stays simple: 8 Ω on any amplifier, passively with level matching. If you want free choice of horn and coverage, combine a Beyma compression driver with a suitable model from the Horns & Waveguides category instead.
What to look out for
- 1.5" voice coil and 140 W AES: thermally far more robust than 1" types.
- 1.7 kg: design cabinet and baffle accordingly.
- Mounting depth 72 mm despite the larger magnet system.
- From 3,500 Hz: high crossover, steep filters, possibly a three-way concept.
- 8 Ω: straightforward both passively and actively.
Frequently asked questions
What is the advantage over a 1" compression tweeter?
Power handling: 140 W AES thanks to the 1.5" coil and 5.2 Tm. At sustained level the coil stays cooler and thermal compression is lower. The drawback is the higher operating limit of 3,500 Hz.
Does the CP-21/F fit a two-way box with a large woofer?
Only to a limited extent: large cones beam strongly at 3,500 Hz, so a mid-range driver in between makes more sense. With compact mid-woofers that play cleanly beyond 3,500 Hz, the two-way solution works.
Which amplifier for the CP-21/F?
Passively, the whole box dictates the amplifier; the CP-21/F only receives the share above the crossover through the high-pass and handles 140 W AES of it. Actively, an amplifier well below this figure is enough as long as the high-pass is steep.
