Beyma CP-850Nd: 2" neodymium compression driver with 4" voice coil and 100 W AES

4.4 kg for a 2" driver with a 4" voice coil and a BL of 16.5 Tm: the Beyma CP-850Nd shows what neodymium does in the upper power segment. A comparable ferrite motor weighs more than twice as much; here the driver stays portable and flyable without giving up motor strength or power handling. The key figures: 100 W AES at 8 Ω, frequency range 500 Hz to 20,000 Hz, mounting depth 114 mm.

The CP-850Nd is the top model among the Beyma compression drivers at 42.audio and the neodymium counterpart to the CP-800/Ti. The large voice coil provides high thermal reserve, the large diaphragm a low usable limit, and the strong motor high efficiency, in other words a lot of SPL from little amplifier power. This is the class for line-array elements, big two-way tops and mid-high horns in three-way rigs.

Use and enclosure

Mounted on a large 2" horn such as the 18Sound XR2064C or a Beyma horn from the Horns & Waveguides category, the CP-850Nd covers the range from the upper midrange to the limit of hearing. The 500 Hz lower limit allows a crossover that takes the woofer out of the game early and exploits the horn's directivity control over a wide band. Rule of thumb: a 24 dB/octave high-pass at least an octave above 500 Hz; with a very large horn and DSP equalisation you can go lower in a controlled way.

At 4.4 kg the mechanical mounting is more relaxed than with ferrite drivers of the same class, but a driver of this size should still be braced to the cabinet. For drive, an 8 Ω channel in the region of the 100 W AES rating is sufficient, definitely with a limiter, because the high efficiency means operator errors reach the coil immediately. In two-way systems, delaying the low-frequency section is also recommended to compensate for the path length difference through the horn.

What to look out for

  • Neodymium magnet with BL 16.5 Tm: the strongest motor in the series at only 4.4 kg.
  • 4" voice coil: 100 W AES power handling for continuous high-level use.
  • 2" horn exit and 500 Hz lower limit: low crossover with a large horn.
  • Mounting depth 114 mm: allow for cabinet depth behind the horn.
  • 8 Ω nominal impedance: run the amplifier channel with a limiter.

Frequently asked questions

Why choose the CP-850Nd over the CP-800/Ti?

Both have a 2" exit, a 4" voice coil and 100 W AES. The CP-850Nd brings the stronger motor thanks to neodymium and weighs only 4.4 kg, which predestines it for portable and flown systems. The CP-800/Ti is the heavier ferrite version for stationary use.

Is this driver suitable for a line-array element?

Yes, high efficiency, high power handling and low weight are exactly the properties required there. What matters then is the right waveguide for the intended vertical coupling.

How low can I cross it over?

500 Hz is the lower limit of the frequency range. With a steep high-pass the crossover should be at least an octave above that; with a large horn, DSP equalisation and a limiter you can approach it in a controlled manner.

Beyma CP-850Nd: manufacturer, spellings and classification
