Beyma F-130: passive two-way crossover, 300 W AES, for Beyma drivers
With the F-130 Beyma offers a second model in its F series that matches the F-100 in rating and weight: 300 W AES and 1 kg. The difference between the two crossovers is not the power class but the tuning, meaning which woofers and HF units Beyma laid out the filters for. Anyone planning a passive two-way cabinet with Beyma drivers therefore chooses not by the model number but by the driver combination the manufacturer intends.
A passive crossover is more than a pair of filters. The components must be chosen so that the sum of LF and HF branch produces neither a hole nor a bump through the transition, and so that the phase of both branches lines up there. Add to that impedance compensation, because the rising impedance of a woofer due to its voice coil inductance would otherwise push a simple filter upwards. All of that is contained in the tuning of the F-130 for its drivers.
Use and enclosure
The F-130 is meant for passive two-way loudspeakers from the Beyma catalogue, as built for stage monitors, compact full-range cabinets or installation speakers. One amplifier channel feeds the crossover, the crossover feeds both drivers. See the crossover's 300 W AES in relation to the drivers: if the woofer can take more, the crossover is the limit, if it takes less, the driver is. In both cases a limiter in the signal chain is better protection than trusting nominal ratings.
Mount the board away from the woofer's magnet system, because inductors sitting in a magnet's stray field change their inductance. Use a cable gauge suited to the power for the leads and secure the cables against vibration. After assembly a frequency response measurement shows whether the transition between the two drivers looks the way Beyma planned it. The data of the matching drivers is in the driver database at 42.audio.
What to look out for
- Beyma F series, passive two-way crossover rated 300 W AES.
- 1 kg weight, compact board for monitors and small cabinets.
- Different tuning from the F-100, choose by driver combination.
- Mount inductors away from the woofer magnet.
- Measure the frequency response through the transition after assembly.
Frequently asked questions
F-100 or F-130, which one do I need?
The driver combination decides, not the power handling, since both are rated identically at 300 W AES. Beyma intends each of the two crossovers for specific woofers and HF units. Tell 42.audio which drivers you plan to use and the assignment can be clarified.
Can I change the crossover frequency of the F-130?
Not without swapping components. A passive crossover is fixed in its tuning, and any change to one component shifts filter point, level and phase at the same time. If you need flexible crossover frequencies, an active solution serves you better.
How much amplifier power can the crossover take?
It is rated 300 W AES. The amplifier may well have more power, as long as a limiter or sensible gain staging ensures that crossover and drivers are not run above their ratings continuously.
